Proposal: UI with rounded corners

Hello everyone!

I’d like to get feedback on switching to rounded corner design by default and having the option to disable it. The mockup is in the screenshot below.

The trend of round corners is coming back again, and I think our users would appreciate it—it should also help attract new ones.

  • Yes, make rounded the default, keep an opt-out
  • No, keep the current square look
  • No preference

I think rounded corners increase usability slightly in that they help define the individual spaces. Don’t take up much room (if the padding wasn’t already there), but they provide great visual feedback subconsciously. And if there’s an opt-out, even better for those that hate them

They look like 2005, to me. :man_shrugging:

I won’t say it looks bad, but I remember when the border-radius CSS was introduced it was a big deal and every UI was all rounded corners everywhere.

Allow me to say this, I don’t care either way.

Having said that I find is funny we go from round edges to square, back to round, back to square, back to round, every few years.

Yes I’m old and have seen this many times before..

Until you brought it up, Opera web browser is using/adding rounded corners and I never even noticed.

it breaks the sections up allowing for better focus on your current task, looking through the menu, looking at quotas etc…

You are right because every web developer (me included) for that period up until last few years used bootstrap for their css framework and that was their default theme.

As developers moved away from bootstrap a few years back in favour of tailwind the designs shifted as tailwind gives a lot more flexibility so a measure of creativity returned in ui’s. However I can tell you the latest tailwind designs are all back on the rounded borders train. So yes what was old is current again.

That’s my rounded-md border 2 cents.

Yeah! And, I have a strong feeling that within the next year, many others will follow this roundish trend. I just want us to be ahead of it and draw more attention by leading the way.

The bootstrap minimalist look has never gone away, there are lots of panels and GUIs that still use it. I think cockpit is a good example.

Just don’t make massive buttons with large padding and with large curves. I hate it when real estate it taken up with pointless styling.

Will aarch64 get official support tho? Sort of teasing on the screenshot.

We have said for quite a while that Virtualmin 8 will support arm64.

Actually, I just changed it yesterday. The buttons and other padding will be slimmer and more aesthetic now.

The option “Yes, keep square the default, have rounded as an option” never seen the light of day.
The decision has been made already, before creating the poll.
So why bother.

If I implement that, it’ll simply show a quick question dialog on the first visit, letting the user choose between the old and new UI within a few seconds. No stress!

No!

To this I object strongly. No more damned questions before even starting to use Virtualmin.

For the old user, not the new users.

Still feels bad. Like centering the wrong thing and at the wrong time. I hate popup questions when I’m in the middle of doing things.

If we’re making the change and if the majority wants the change, just make the change. If you want an option to change it back, that’s fine (and will hopefully make the folks who don’t like the change happy), but don’t make it everybody’s problem by asking everyone a question about it.

Friction is bad UI. Questions unrelated to the current task are friction.

Alright, agreed. I’ll make sure the option in theme settings is easy to find and use.

Things move one. If every consideration is based on what about 5 users want then nothing will change. I would benefit and loose from this decision model so I do have some skin in the game.

On this one I agree with @joe. Don’t put this option in the wizard or any post-upgrade, just let the corners be round.

Rounded corners should not even be a configurable options unless the admin wants to use custom CSS, certainly not procedural via code when the theme is built.
