Virtualmin website IRC channel

Any chance of a irc channel, it will help all vent and be great fun. Also aleviate the foolishness on the forum here a bit.

Ilia started an unofficial Discord, I think. But, I hate Discord and consider its use anathema for use by Open Source projects because it closes visibility to only logged in users, so I’ve never seen it.

I used to monitor the #virtualmin IRC channel on freenode, but it wasn’t super active and I haven’t been there in a decade or more, and I guess freenode had an exodus of free software users over some stink a while back, being replaced by liberachat, maybe? I don’t follow IRC closely, I just see the chatter about it on social media now and then.

Given my limited time for Virtualmin work, I focus on one support channel (this forum). But, I don’t oppose the existence of other unofficial channels.

Discourse is instant, irc is probably not needed.

Yeah, but to be honest, I haven’t gotten back to it for years, so there’s no Discord channel.

I’ve been thinking about implementing an internal chat using XMPP protocol to let all Virtualmin or even Webmin users chat with each other using the right-side slider if they choose to opt in for it. However, it could take some effort to implement, and no one has ever asked for it. And, it isn’t trivial to do cleanly.

So, if users want it and Joe or Jamie doesn’t object, I might consider doing it sometime in the future.

Discourse has a chat feature but Private Messages isn’t that onerous.

Please release support for EL10 first. It must have some nasty bugs to delay the release for so long.

@Jamie, is there anything else that holds Virtualmin 8 release? I’m almost done with the AWS integration and fixes, and should finish it completely sometime tomorrow.

I’ll create a changelog for Virtualmin 8 first, and if nothing else is in the way, we can release it this weekend!

@Randomz, if you’re in a hurry, you can install on Rocky 10 today using a new repo. This will be the new default repo for all new installations after Virtualmin 8 is released.

sudo sh -c "$(curl -fsSL https://download.virtualmin.com/install-script)" -- --bundle LAMP

No I think we’re good! What AWS integration are you referring to though?

never been a fan of IRC (probably never had time for it) chat bots the whole thing is like a gossip sponge :sponge: , pub/sports bar talk, does not serve any productive purpose - if implemented, do make it optional - please.

liberachat please
let us know if you do open up a channel there.. (freenode is “dead”)

Each additional method of chat does these things:

  • Dilutes Virtualmin and Webmin user interaction
  • Excludes another set of users.

virtualmin users not registered on this forum are also “excluded”, but that’s anyone’s choice really.

imho, even an unofficial irc channel, would be nice… (but no strong feelings about it.)

I meant our new AWS cloud migration, not anything related to the Virtualmin code base.

Not everyone has your opinion, true irc is never a chatbot and was of great use. Gen z people have no idea how the internet was.

Nor do they usually know how anything else works.

Yeah, how things have changed. Thing is not to be like them. The day you stop learning is the day you die. I tell you AI is really starting to get up my nose, its the end of an era now. There is no stopping it. It has to be and will be.

Toilet paper out of necessity.

thankfully, or at least only partially

Do not worry about it, no one is perfect in all that he says.

this topic is becoming just like IRC (changing every minute) and I can see why joe and probably others can’t keep up
