I guess you can create a mount location using that.

I theory it should, /mnt is a spare location, so add something off that.

I think you need to make the directories first. Use the /mnt location and see what happens. You need the forward slash.
pick a location, like i said /mnt is free. So either type it in or use button to the right to pick the location. the location needs to be empty. all else should be default

can you just add /var/backups, plus you have created that directory?
Also Create a ext4 filesystem first.
its just creating the ext4 filesystem now
but when i go to backup the system to the mounting point i just made its not letting me click backup now

Yep and select backup destination as local file or directory.
