Starting yesterday, I am getting hundreds of Mailer-Daemons and like bounces. This is from a domain where I used to host email, but I have moved the mail for the domain to privateemail.com , and do not have mail service turned on for the domain.
I am getting Daemons like this:
From: MAILER-DAEMON@host5.johnsimmonshypertext.com root@strannik.com
And then a bounce from someone’s server, indicating that the email came from root@strannik.com
How do I close this hole? I have DMARC, etc. already set up.

I have turned postfix off for now until I can solve the issue.
look at the bounce, was the originating emails IP coming from you. It maybe someone using your email address to spam. The bounced emails gives you info on the source.MAILER-DAEMON@host5.johnsimmonshypertext.com
This morning I had 2000 Mailer Daemons. This is with Postfix and Dovecot permanently deactivated. It’s the same issue as before.

I’m a bit curious about the analysis but if Postfix and Dovecot aren’t running, then maybe you have a script churning out spam on the server.
If you block port 25 in and out then you won’t be spamming anyone.
So whats in the mail log, might help.

With Postfix and Dovecot shut off their shouldn’t be any logs. I think the rogue script keeps trying and creating daemons.
Turning of port 25 stopped it for now. I still have not found a definite cause.
look for any aliases in your Bind Configuration or anything fishy that you didn’t add might also want to harden your security a bit better there are lots of ways and methods just search the forums.
Maybe 2FA change your passwords etc… Yeah wow frigging hackers I remember a similar thing when I first started using virtualmin I think thats why the ISP closed up port 25 honestly. Then I was using their mail server instead of sending directly I could use mail.xxx.net:25 as my outgoing mail server for a while then they found out I was using that as well and closed it up. Kinda sucks now I gotta use 3rd party thank goodness for ZOHO it really kicks grass.

hrmmm did you make sure your domain is not hijacked at your domain register did you try using the domain locking feature and 2FA etc…?
