I am trying to temporarily increase the disk quota of a single Virtual Server without changing the Account Plan for all other Virtual Servers using that plan.
The Virtual Server is:
Domain: example.com
Unix user: exampleuser
Account Plan: example_plan
Plan ID: 149984792029540
The assigned Account Plan has a 5 GB quota:
quota=5242880
uquota=5242880
My intention is to temporarily give this single Virtual Server 10 GB while keeping it assigned to the existing 5 GB Account Plan.
I changed the quota using:
Edit Virtual Server → Quotas and Limits
Immediately after saving, the Virtualmin domain configuration correctly contained:
plan=149984792029540
uquota=10485760
quota=10485760
The actual Unix filesystem quota was also correctly changed to 10 GB:
Disk quotas for user exampleuser (uid 1373):
Filesystem blocks quota limit
/dev/sda1 45056 10485760 10485760
I also unchecked:
“Apply limits from new plan if changed”
and saved the Virtual Server again.
Immediately after saving, everything was still correct:
plan=149984792029540
uquota=10485760
quota=10485760
and:
Filesystem blocks quota limit
/dev/sda1 45056 10485760 10485760
However, a few minutes later, without making another change to the Virtual Server, the values stored in the Virtualmin domain configuration were reset to the Account Plan values:
plan=149984792029540
uquota=5242880
quota=5242880
Interestingly, the actual Unix filesystem quota was not reset and remained at 10 GB:
Filesystem blocks quota limit
/dev/sda1 45056 10485760 10485760
So at this point there is also an inconsistency between Virtualmin’s stored domain configuration and the actual filesystem quota:
Virtualmin configuration: 5 GB
Actual Unix quota: 10 GB
I checked the timestamp of the Virtualmin domain configuration file. The file was rewritten at:
2026-10-28 09:53:24
The lastsave information in the domain configuration is particularly interesting:
lastsave=1793177604
lastsave_type=cmd
lastsave_user=
lastsave_script=/webmincron/webmincron.pl
lastsave_webmincron=virtual-server::run_cron_script
lastsave_pid=398446
This indicates that the change was not made through the Virtualmin web interface, but during execution of a Webmin scheduled job using:
/webmincron/webmincron.pl
virtual-server::run_cron_script
The Account Plan itself still contains:
name=example_plan
quota=5242880
uquota=5242880
Therefore, it appears that one of the scheduled Virtualmin jobs rewrites the quota stored in the Virtualmin domain configuration back to the Account Plan value.
What is also interesting is that this operation only appears to update Virtualmin’s stored values. It did not change the actual Unix filesystem quota in this test.
Expected behavior / use case
I would like to keep this Virtual Server assigned to its normal 5 GB Account Plan, but temporarily override its disk quota to 10 GB.
I would expect a per-domain quota explicitly configured under Edit Virtual Server → Quotas and Limits to remain at 10 GB until I explicitly change it again, unless I explicitly request that the Account Plan limits be reapplied.
This would allow temporary or permanent individual quota exceptions without having to create another Account Plan just for one Virtual Server.
Questions
-
Is this behavior expected?
-
What exactly is
virtual-server::run_cron_scriptdoing that causes the storedquotaanduquotavalues to be changed back to the Account Plan values? -
Is there a supported way to make a per-domain quota override persistent while leaving the Virtual Server assigned to the existing Account Plan?
-
What exactly does“Apply limits from new plan if changed” control? I expected disabling this option to prevent the Account Plan limits from overwriting my individual quota, but the stored quota was still changed back later by the scheduled job.
-
Is it expected that this scheduled operation changes the Virtualmin domain configuration back to 5 GB but leaves the actual Unix filesystem quota at 10 GB?

I found what appears to be a very similar report in the Virtualmin forum, Disk quota being reset constantly. In that case, a manually changed disk quota was also reported as subsequently reverting to the default value. [forum.virtualmin.com]
There is also a more recent discussion, Some clarification disk quotas and plans - where do i set them, about the relationship between Account Plan quotas and individual Virtual Server quotas. That discussion specifically mentions individual quota customization as a use case. [forum.virtualmin.com]
I can provide the contents of the relevant /etc/webmin/webmincron/crons/*.cron files and additional Virtualmin/Webmin logs if needed.
