How can I make it so that “Aliases” in “List Virtual Servers” shows as disabled?
Thank you.
Why?
Some of the standard Aliases postmaster@
hostmaster@
abuse@
webmaster@
are globally accepted methods of contact.
But you could always delete them or forward them or use a sub-server or alias-server where they are disabled by default.
I don’t need it and it’s confusing Postfix when it comes to relaying. I’ve read here before that there’s a way to disable it, but I don’t want to dabble to deeply in the perpetual complexity that is Postfix configuration. I’m having issues with my catch all stealing mail from all other addresses and this is the cause.
So delete the catchall, but I’ve tested a catchall and normal mailboxes still get there mail.
please post your /etc/postfix/virtual
thanks
I hope you not edit files to do this rather then using virtualmin.
anyway. test domain I use one user steve. standard alaises to my person email work fine.
Is this the entire file? No, there’s something very wrong with the catchall implementation… But I don’t care anymore. I’m just about to give up on Virtualmin.
I switched to sendmail, catch-all is working PERFECTLY. To heck with the convoluted piece of trash that is Postfix. I apologize if I sound passionate, but I have been at this on and off for months. There’s a small learning curve to getting it working with Virtualmin, but it is very possible indeed. I am going to open a ticket on Github to ask for a special switch to install Virtualmin with Sendmail instead of Postfix.
virtualmin works fine, sounds like you installed Webmin (seeing we are in the webmin forum) then added the Virtualmin module. As far as I know no one uses sendmail on a Virtualmin install, I think it would break things. My first webmin install I had Sendmail and thought I would not move to postfix. Haven’t used it since moving to the Virtualmin install and don’t miss it. Everything is so easy in virtualmin especially if your hosting alot of web sites. No need to worry about config files. You might like that
I just got mail relaying to work properly without enabling the old two user system or commenting out resolve_dequoted_address = no.
Yes, there definitely is a problem with the way Virtualmin creates the server which causes the issue, and no there is no black magic necessary with the /etc/postfix/virtual file (and yes, the file is necessary).
More details to follow hopefully.
no, this should not be in the webmin forum – this has to do with the way virtualmin configures things, it should be in the virtualmin forum.
There is no issue with virtualmin, I’ve tested and works fine. Don’t blame virtualmin. Don’t you think there would be more then one user having this issue if it was virtualmin?
Well, you will forgive me if I link my Github post here anyways for posterity where I intend to explain what is in fact an issue with the way Virtualdub sets up new systems with the Wizard:
https://github.com/virtualmin/virtualmin-gpl/issues/578
I’m going to be posting there, for anyone reading this thread in the future. There is a solution to this issue. The catch all is now working fine for me.
And did you read the last response?
Aslo did you use the docs on catchall in virtualmin
https://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/tutorial/how-to-create-a-catch-all-email-account/
but too late your using sendmail. good luck.
I abandoned Sendmail. @Joe said it was “well supported”, but it was awkward and dysfunctional at best.
I went back to postfix – it’s working perfectly.
My next step is to explain the steps I took to get it working, which I intend to do here in this thread.
Am I the only one confused here?
I thought this topic was about “Disabling Aliases” it seems to have degenerated into another anti Virtualmin rant or a different topic altogether regarding catch-all, postfix vs sendmail.
One subject per topic PLEASE - I do know it is easy to wander - my brain does it as well
That’s a fair point, though I never intended for it to degenerate into a rant, nor do I oppose Virtualmin. To the contrary, I have it working perfectly now (and I even solved my Letsencrypt issue).
In my defense, a quirk with Virtualmin and the Alias feature was in fact causing the issue, hence the reason for this thread.
what is the quirk ? So if it happens to someone else this thread could be a reference
I can’t replicate the quirk now. It’s ‘just working’ The only thing I am doing different now is doing a Debian 11 non-graphical expert install and omitting everything from the install except that which I can’t deselect.
Then I install wget, download the virtualmin install, run it and voila, the catch all is working properly.
Before, I was using Ubuntu.
