The first option, “Virtual Server Summary,” was incredibly helpful for opening the site link in a new tab. However, I believe it was recently removed from Virtualmin, possibly as part of a cleanup effort.
Is there any chance we could get this link back as the first element? This would make it easy to open the site in a new tab by simply right-clicking the URL and choosing to open the link in an incognito window, which helps avoid DNS cache issues.
If it’s not possible to add it back, that’s fine as well. We can always copy and paste the URL from any of the feature tabs that display the link at the top.
I use virtualmin->list virtual servers which brings up links for all virtual servers but you could choose from there, I have set this as the default page on virtualmin selection
@Jamie and I decided to remove it to simplify things. However, perhaps we should keep it?
Also, it’s unclear why you already have this change available, as we haven’t released that version of Virtualmin and Webmin yet. Could you show a screenshot of how it appears for you?
And, you can duplicate the tab by right-clicking on Webmin or Virtualmin, or more easily by using the hotkey ⌃ ⌥ D (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+D (Windows/Linux). Press F1 to see more available hotkeys.
the screenshot you have attached is too messy at the top.
Create virtual server is in such a random and non-user friendly position. Why is it sandwiched between search and the server drop down list.
create virtual server will keep getting antecedently hit.
How do I now view a summary of a virtual user is the button is missing?
I am not a fan of this new layout and I am sure I will not be on my own.
Putting search at the top is defiantly a good thing though and it is a fully enclosed search box which I wanted for a while (p.s. I used css to do this for me)
I can see the logic flow by having create virtual server above the list of virtual servers.
I have added a + icon next to the virtual server dropdown as I feel this is logical and is a better fit that the Create virtual server text and icon out there on its own. You can use a tooltip for those who cannot work it out.
I have separated the search from the rest with a simple line which adds clear separation. It does not have to be that long or big.
NB: I did not add the Summary button back in so i could push my other points, but I would like to add my request to keep it, I think at the top is better, but I am not fixed on that.
It’s at the top, as the main feature of Virtualmin—it’s in the right place.
The small create icon on the side is bad UI. The create virtual server button should be bigger and clearly stand out as a main feature—which it does now.
It’s been in a much worse place for a long time (under the currently selected virtual server confuses new users every time into thinking everything is related to the selected server, while also not knowing how to create a new top-level virtual server…the new layout is much better than that).
An icon without text is not a good compromise, I don’t think. I think it needs to be quite apparent how to create a new virtual server. It should be the most obvious item on the page.
I think “what I’m used to” is being the enemy of “what’s actually more usable for new users” here.
We could turn the Search and Create Virtual Server button into a widget—I tried that, but I’m not sure I got the look and feel right. Another issue is that the Create Virtual Server button is conditional, so it’s not always there.
thanks @jimr1 for sharing the screenshot, thats exactly how its being shown.
@Ilia I believe this is in the perfect location as it clearly distinguishes “Create Virtual Server” as a global/different option for creating the server, differentiating below ones are for managing the selected virtual servers.
Although I believe the first option under the selected domain dropdown should be ‘Virtual Server Summary’ and not any icon, as icons only confuse new users (other than search).
However, search can be removed as it is already integrated into the dropdown, or an icon can be added for search (which will trigger the dropdown for searching the virtual servers).
@shoulders I don’t think it’s needed, since we could just pad the other links under the select too. All those links are related to the selected virtual server anyway. I don’t think much needs to change here. Thanks!
