Backup Deletion fails and nearly crashes server

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version	Debian 13
Webmin version	2.621

When deleting a local file backup via Virtualmin UI → Backup Logs, the deletion process eats up all available memory and swap space. The server hangs for about 20 seconds but then the deletion process stops and server resources return to normal. The UI does not give any further feedback, but the backup is not deleted from disk.

After manually deleting the specific backup folder contents, backup removal via UI succeeds.

How’s the disk space? That can cause weird problems.

it is pretty full (20GB left).
How would that be a problem when deleting a backup ?

Like I said, low disk can cause all sorts of weird problems. Once you got a little freed up the problem disappeared?

Like I said. Weird. Counterintuitive but experience told me to ask.

I added a 100GB to the VPS. But backup deletion still fails as described above

Also changed Webmin temp folder from /tmp (ramdisk) to something else which fixed other issues during backup and restore (“no space left on device”).
But the backup deletion issue remains the same.

Have you checked the logs? I’m not sure where this would be though. My backup directory is set to discard after 3 months and it appears to be doing that. I believe webmin has its’ own logs.

That one seems to rear its ugly head a lot. How much physical memory do you have? It would explain the

I’m relatively certain that this would probably be the compression algorithm.

Change the Webmin tmp dir to one that is not on a RAM disk.

Oh, wow! That’s interesting! Could you provide more details on what’s happening exactly? About 5–7 seconds after you start the deletion process, can you run webmin stats or webmin stats > /root/webmin.stats and share the output here by dragging and dropping created webmin.stats file into the forum?

Also, @Jamie, have you ever heard about this issue before?

@phoenixtech, are your backups configured to run over SFTP?

No this is a new one for me! I’d be interested to see the output from the command strace -p XYZ where XYZ is the PID of the webmin process that’s using up all the CPU time.

This is in regards to LOCAL backups, not SFTP
I tried with both single file and folder-based backups
I tried with zip, tar and tar.gz formats
All show same behaviour when deleting.

This doesn’t seem to be the correct output. It should start with:

And, it should be run at the moment when the issue occurs, as you described earlier—specifically when the deletion process is consuming most of the available memory.

What do you have set on the “Webmin ⇾ Webmin Configuration: Logging” page, and what about the “Record all modified files before actions, for rollbacks” option? Is it enabled or disabled? If it’s enabled, disable it and try again.

If you want to keep that option enabled, you need to apply the patch below to make it work as expected:
