hi Guys,
I havent used Webserver with Virtualmin for a while.
Installing was kinda short.
It didn’t ask for how to want to store the passwords, plain or encrypted.
And it also creates automaticly an DNS entry.
Now i wanted to remove services I dont use, bind is one of them.
But Virtualmin won’t let me disable named - it’s in use by hostname
Is there a way to install Virtualmin WITHOUT it’s ceating any DNS entries? Like the “old” way?
I would like to control the DNS entries myself. Even it its only I know whats running and if like SSL Certs should have any issues… No clue how I would create a new SSL cert for hostname at this moment.
Bind has a small enough footprint that I wouldn’t worry about removing it if you don’t know all the implications. You can simply stop it from running as an option.
I kinda recall VM still outputs records even if turned off so people have something they can cut and paste into their DNS providers records.
It sounds like the automatic domain creation for the hostname (this happens so a Let’s Encrypt cert can be requested during installation so you won’t get browser warnings when logging in) is what’s causing trouble for you. I think you can just delete that virtual server. I would guess you can also disable DNS for that domain (though I’m not sure what the UI for the hostname domain is like, there was discussion about hiding it to reduce confusion about where the heck it came from and what to do with it…but that causes problems, too).
@Ilia, is there anything stopping OP from simply disabling DNS in the automatically created hostname domain?
The right way would be is to disable “Setup SSL certificate from provider for hostname” option in “System Settings ⇾ Virtualmin Configuration: SSL settings” page.
The option mentioned above has three states: to configure it and make it visible, configure and not show, and not configure at all. The default is to configure and not show it in the UI to prevent users from trying to enable mail or doing anything else fancy. This domain is automatically renamed when the hostname changes. Users shouldn’t interact with it at all.
No, nothing should stop them to do it. If the DNS is hosted elsewhere it’s not important if this feature is enabled or not.
The upcoming Virtualmin 8 release with a minimal stack, won’t include a mail stack, DNS, or FTP, will do it right by disabling the Virtualmin DNS feature during installation.
Right now, a user has to make the domain visible, uncheck the DNS feature on the “Edit Virtual Server” page, save it, and then hide it again.
uhhh Virtualmin 8… will it support Debian 13? Is there a test/beta?
ATM im just playing aroud with a VPS and would really like to try a new Virtualmin.
Yes having a working SSL is nice sure… but back in the days… it was not to hard to “click here to accept self cert” and then create an own hostname.domain.tld to have mail server and SSL cert foe postfix, apache and so on.
I’ve had similar issues with the default domains (which I generally think are a good improvement) but I can’t ever see it listed in the drop down for virtual host selection - how do I do the ‘make the domain visible’ bit?
For clarity, I had to change the option for ‘Setup SSL certificate from provider for hostname’ from ‘Yes’ (the default on new installs I believe) to ‘Yes, and have it configurable’.
