@Joe Guess this is a keen question for you directly But what application do you all use for your own Forum(this Forum)?
Discourse! I absolutely love it!
I rarely have unqualified praise for any software, but Discourse is as close to perfect as I can expect an Open Source project to be. It has a couple of annoyances, but it’s so much better than any other forum I have ever used that it’s not even funny. And, I’ve used a lot of forums…we’ve been through at least five different for Virtualmin forums alone!
We run it in a container on Ubuntu behind nginx. It’s our only Ubuntu server, aside from test and build VMs. I chose Ubuntu for it just because the docs for Discourse were written for it, and it was easiest to just go with the flow. It has been extremely reliable, integrating SSO login with WordPress was mostly painless, and it’s fun to use and administer.
They also have a hosted version that’s not terribly expensive, if you don’t need custom stuff. We needed some customizations and some plugins that aren’t available to the hosted version, so we self-host. I also prefer to self-host anything that has sensitive data on it, and customers talk about their servers and sometimes share passwords or other sensitive stuff in PMs, so I’d rather we control that data.
Thank you Sir! Any idea if/when a script would be available for Virutalmin servers to be able to install it?
Not soon. It needs PostgreSQL, a recent Ruby on Rails, and a bunch of other dependencies that are very hard to deal with across all of our distros using the current Install Scripts model.
It will require support for container-based installs, which is planned for Virtualmin 8. (Don’t ask when 8 is coming, we don’t pre-announce, but we’re planning to do major releases on an 18 month cycle, so…we’re probably about a year and a couple months away, but it could take six months longer than that, just depends on how much free time we all have.)
But, also, nothing stops you from running it on a Virtualmin system today. You just proxy to it like any other web app. We just can’t automatically install it in any reasonable way at the moment.
