Hi all, Newbie to Virtualmin here, used DA, Pleask and cPanel for years. My question is this:

If I purchase a VirtualMin licence to go pro… Is that all I need to pay for? I need 2 DNS servers and 1 main server hosting the 3 sites. So in total 3 servers need setting up, but not sure what versions I need. I understand Virtualmin will go on the production server and I have to pay to get the DNS clustering function, but is it just 2 free versions of Webmin on the DNS servers just running Bind? I hope that makes sense. the 2 DNS servers are my nameservers.

Cheers!
MM.

@MillbrookMush,

For what you’ve described, you could use:

  • 1 Virtualmin GPL or Pro server (Websites)
  • 2 Webmin servers (DNS)

I have setup multiple clusters in this manner, even going as far as separating MariaDB onto another server and even the Email Stack onto another server. Though this is just for reference in terms of what is possible.

If you’d like to contract me, I can get you up and running within a few hours. Drop me a PM if you’re interested.

The Virtualmin server could be one of your DNS servers. DNS is pretty lightweight.

But, yes, what you describe would work fine.

We have documentation for setting up the secondary DNS server. In your case, you’d do it twice (BIND still runs on the Virtualmin server, in this case, but you can firewall it so it’s only accessible to the other DNS servers, if you want…BIND that is only serving the transfers to the other servers will be tiny and use almost no resources).

Any chance you could add “for DNS” or similar to the title. This is a useful thread, but will get totally lost in a few days.

If you search for “secondary DNS” or even just “DNS” in our docs, you’re going to get the documentation for setting up secondary DNS. This isn’t an obscure topic.

Yet here we are.

works fine, issue is do people read doc first before asking questions.

no, they use google or some other search tool. :sad_but_relieved_face:

I guess it’s just a habit of asking before checking. I tried a bunch of search tools, even foreign ones, and our site comes up as the first result:

but, that only happens when you specifically qualify the search with “Virtualmin”
when you search with the more vague “secondary DNS” or even vaguer “DNS” you get a more esoteric mix.

My point is that as unnecessary as this thread is, it’s virtually useless with something like “for DNS” added to the title.

Either delete it or rename it.
