Virtualmin email config check and default config

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version Ubuntu Linux 18.04.6
Virtualmin version 7.1-1 Pro

When I installed vmin a few years ago, I never expected the sending of emails would “just work” but after having spoken with another vmin user they told me that this is the case and after looking over a few email related guides it would seem that the sending of emails from vmin should indeed “just work”.

With a fair bit a difficulty I was able to configure vmin (postfix) to send emails via gmail but, in the name of ‘security’, google no longer allow gmail to be used by external apps as of the end of last month which is why I’m here now wondering what might be the easiest fix.

I’m already aware of this page:

https://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/email/

The two most relevant pages of which would seem to be:

https://doxfer.webmin.com/Webmin/Postfix_Basic_Configuration

and

https://doxfer.webmin.com/Webmin/Postfix_Mail_Server

but reading through them I’m none the wiser.

One of my first ports of call was Webmin → Servers → Postfix mail server → Configuration Check → Show but this page doesn’t give me any clues as to what I have and have not configured correctly as far as email is concerned. It doesn’t seem to check anything? If it does, I don’t understand what its supposed to be telling me. Is this not the page to check email config?

I’ve had a quick look at the install script but failed to see where the bit that sets up the default email config is. Can I reset the email config only without resetting or re-installing any other part of vmin?

I really just want email for two things, so that the password reset page will work and so that my account creation script can email users their login details. I’d be very grateful for an easy fix or idiots guide to getting email sorted.

Thanks

@danboid,

Are you suggesting you are “relaying” through Gmail at the moment? If so, why not simply host your email with them?

Hi tpnsolutions

Using gmail was only ever a temporary solution. I’d like to avoid them.

Have you configured and tested the sending of email from your webmin/virtualmin server? How do you host your server (Amazon? Azure? Self hosted?) and did the sending of email ‘just work’ for you?

I’d like to hear what mail relay services people are using if they’re not using the virtualmin default, which I believe is postfix.

It seems my virtualmin server can already send email but I’ve only been able to do that via the webmin web interface.

To send an email via webmin, I go to the Webmin tab > Servers > Read User Mail . When selecting a mailbox I set ‘Find User Where equals’ to ‘root’ and then select ‘Compose’. This gives me a web based email composing screen that at least lets me email other MS email account (we’re hosted on Azure).

Note that there is a very long delay, like a minute or longer, from me hitting ‘Compose’ to me seeing the compose screen. Is that because we have 100’s of users?

I have been trying to send email using postfix from our vmin server via the mail terminal command. How am I supposed to send emails from the command line or scripts from a webmin or virtualmin server?

Email seems to be working on this server now but I’d still like to know what the best way to check that SMTP is OK as far as Webmin/vmin are concerned, if there is one?

I’m really not too concerned about the issue with the delay when pushing the compose button as I won’t actually be using that feature but its cool to know it exists. That is certainly one way to test the sending of mail.

@danboid,

Unless your hosting provider blocks sending email, you don’t need to relay via another provider as Virtualmin by default is setup to send email directly to recipient server.

I still handle gmail through Thunderbird. Maybe I’m grandfathered? The day they insist on my using their webmail is the day I delete the account. I only use gmail to communicate with Google, and I’ve yet to receive an important email from them.

The only one I recommend these days is Fastmail. I personally just use Postfix for most of my mail; but when clients or others ask about other options, Fastmail is my only recommendation. That’s because I’ve had a Fastmail account since before Moses had a beard, and it’s always worked flawlessly.

Fastmail is also one of my off-server addresses for system alerts and the like. They’re very, very reliable.

Probably. My incoming spam outnumbers my legit mail by about 10 to 1; so if your server is anything like mine, SpamAssassin could be using a lot of resources.

The same ways you would from any other Linux server. To my knowledge, Virtualmin isn’t involved in that at all. Maybe a firewall issue?
