The June 17th release I was able to dnf update Webmin to 2.402 no problem but there is no update available for Usermin. Current Usermin on system 2.301 but 2.302 was released.
I refreshed the dnf cache , checked the repos and all was ok.
Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or if maybe I’m missing some details?
Operating system Rocky Linux 9.6 Webmin version 2.402 Virtualmin version 7.30.8.pro
Where are you getting your release information from?
Webmin and Usermin that are packaged for “Virtualmin” go through extra testing before released, so even if Webmin and/or Usermin show a new release in say GitHub, it doesn’t necessarily mean this version is ready for use with Virtualmin.
“Webmin” and “Usermin” are packaged as a “standalone” products in addition to being part of Virtualmin. The standalone product is released a bit more frequently addressing Webmin-only issues and/or introducing new features.
The version you see there is NOT the identical version used by Virtualmin. While technically it is very similar, before being release for Virtualmin, a few extra steps need to be taken noteably testing against “Virtualmin” specific features and also a general purpose test to ensure integrity and a quality meeting Virtualmin standards.
Bottom line, DO NOT rely on the changelog at “webmin.com” for determining available versions. Some versions for that matter are skipped altogether per the above statement about “testing”.
Always refer to the Virtualmin GPL / Pro repo respectively to determine available versions for use with Virtualmin.
*** While it make technically be possible to install a version from the Webmin repo, it can also be dangerous in a production environment as these versions are NOT guaranteed to work properly with Virtualmin. ***
Most if not all of the above talk about “Virtualmin” also applies to “Cloudmin”.
No problem. Also note that “Webmin”, “Usermin”, “Virtualmin” and “Authentic Theme” are separate products, which means they will not carry an identical version. Hence the varying version numbers between the above.
This is also covered by the guidelines (though I guess it just says “Webmin”, but Webmin and Usermin are on their own release cycle and Virtualmin repos will always get them later):
“Don’t ask when a new Webmin version will arrive in Virtualmin repositories. It is always delayed a short time after upstream release for integration testing.”
It’s fine. I don’t know how to make the guidelines show up automatically for new users. I think there’s a link or something in the welcome message, but I’m not even sure about that.
Anyway, lots of people ask about it (which is why it has an entry in the guidelines). You’re not alone.
Just to finish off this thread I did do a dnf update today and Usermin updated
I did not know it was against policy to ask the original question I did
I think many who do ask this question are worried about security updates and while that is important I understand that every repo has time lines
I will not ask again and I appreciate everyone’s responses and help on this thread
To be clear, we don’t re-package Webmin and Usermin separately for Virtualmin repos. We just run an extra round of testing, and if everything looks good, we push the same packages—without any changes—to the Virtualmin repos. It’s the exact same package released on GitHub with a slight delay.
It’s important to point out that by the time we release Webmin to all users, it’s already been thoroughly tested. That doesn’t mean the Webmin version on GitHub is a beta or pre-release. We just take extra testing for users running Virtualmin.
That said, using Webmin repos alongside Virtualmin isn’t necessarily a bad idea. It’s not suitable for everyone—and we don’t officially recommend it—but it’s not wrong either, since the GitHub release is stable and production-ready.
I have looked around and discovered that the Welcome Banner is not part of the Discourse core. If you update our forum to the latest version, I will take care of enabling it.
