User can't select Virtualmin tab

Operating system AlmaLinux 9.3
Webmin version 2.105
Virtualmin version 7.9.0

if log on using my user account, i cannot select the Virtualmin tab - the UI switches back to the Dashboard tab

given my mouse buttons are a bit sensitive, i suspect i may have accidentally clicked a settings and disabled access to Virtualmin for non-root users, however i looked through the settings pretty carefully and i can’t find anything wrong

new info: from the dashboard, if i select logs and reports and click on a log to view, the Virtualmin tab loads

another thing i’m seeing is that the backups options are missing for the user on the Virtualmin tab - only the following are available:

Virtual Server Details
Edit Users
File Manager
Webmin Modules
Manage Virtual Server
Services
Mail Options
Logs and Reports
List Virtual Servers

When I click on Virtualmin it shows this, I think that’s normal behavior.

but can you switch to the Virtualmin tab?

@vmin

What you are showing is being logged in as a user and this behaviour is normal because:

  • You effectively are always on the Virtualmin Tab
  • You do not have the webmin tab so the empty tab is filled with a Dashboard Tab which acts as a shortcut to the dashboard.
  • If you click on the virtualmin tab you will be taken to the dashboard / dashboard tab

When you are logged in as root you have the following

and here you can see the webmin Tab is present.

i’m lost here - if a user logs on, how do they access the backup and restore module?

the only way i can get to that is from webmin

Did you allow them access to the service?

You want users to access the Webmin filesystem backup module? That’d provide root-level access to the data on the system, so that doesn’t seem right.

Virtualmin backup privileges can be granted to a domain owner user. Restore is trickier, as there are security implications of allowing a user to modify config files, which a domain backup does.

nosir!

and therein lies the problem … i never intentionally disabled it, but i may have by accident

from where does one check this, 'cause i looked everywhere (webmin modules, server templates, user settings, etc., etc.)

this doesn’t seem right…

virtualmin > system settings > account plans

this is no longer an issue - apparently, somehow, backups became disabled for non-root users, perhaps through another module config or something - no idea
