Upgrade and Migrate to a new Server?

Hello,

A relative server novice here rather thrown in at the deep end.

We are running an older version of webmin/virtualmin on a Linux CentOS 5 server but will be migrating shortly to a new CentOS 7 server, and want to use the latest version of webmin/virtualmin there.

I’ve found some guidelines for the migration - but is it recommended to (i) migrate the existing server contents first and then upgrade webmin, or (ii) to install the newest version of webmin fresh onto the new server and then restore the old server data and settings into that?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Please don’t - install CentOS 8, which is fully supported.

… migrate the existing server contents first and then upgrade webmin,

No.

… to install the newest version of webmin fresh onto the new server and then restore the old server data and settings into that?

Almost, yes – make sure that you’re using official Virtualmin install script:

wget https://software.virtualmin.com/gpl/scripts/install.sh

… and later use Backup and Restore/Restore Virtual Servers feature, to restore backups. There is also Add Servers/Import Virtual Server feature:
