i have been seeing this in multiple places. Right now the rust versions are not working fully yet…i am already mov9ing to debian just because ubuntu is getting too bloated. Will Virtualmin continue to support ubuntu if they truly go forward with this?
I don’t see where rewriting them is an issue as long as they don’t start renaming them. I didn’t get too far into this but I’m guessing it is meant to be a drop in replacement so it should ‘not’ be an issue.
There are many things I hate about Ubuntu. This isn’t one of them.
I have no problem with people rewriting commonly used tools in memory-safe languages. That said, I think coreutils is a silly place to start; I can’t remember the last time there was a security or reliability issue in coreutils. It’s among the most battle-tested software on the planet, used by every Linux distribution for decades, and even before Linux was popular the coreutils were often used on UNIX systems.
What I want to see replaced most urgently is OpenSSL.
And, we have never given any indication we will drop support for Ubuntu. It’s the most popular Linux distribution now, we have to support it even if I think it’s a worse choice than some others.
Ubuntu got me
It’s still early, and the Rust replacements aren’t fully functional yet. If Ubuntu goes all-in on this, major projects like Virtualmin will likely adapt, but Debian is a solid choice if you prefer stability.
never intimated Virtualmin was moving away from Ubuntu…this was informational only.
Secondly, i am moving to Debian from Ubuntu due to Ubuntu being pretty bloated even in a minimal form.
Abbreviating “Virtualmin” as “virt” could be confusing. There are many things with “virt” in their name. I’ve corrected it in your post/comments.
Debian is an excellent distribution for servers!
