I noticed that the official recommended installation method is to install Virtualmin directly, rather than what we previously thought, which was to first install Webmin, Nginx, MySQL, and a specific PHP version. What are the differences between these two approaches?

The latest version offered by the OS distro you install. If you need different versions I see this is now a FAQ.
