Thank God for the flawless backup feature

Can I post a non problem topic for once? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I F-up a server beyond recovery. Took me years, but I manage to do it. Timeshift could not save me either. It’s so much stress when all your websites are down. So I decided to swipe the server clean, installed an fesh OS image, reinstalled Virtualmin, uploaded all the backups, restored all backups and everything was running perfect again within an hour!

Thank God eh Virtualmin for the flawless backup feature :folded_hands:

Yeah its great, I’ve never had a issue, even moving to a different OS.
Only things you may look for are custom setting you might have done in webmin, I always have to double the file attachment allowance in postfix to stop complaints from customers.

I find it interesting that you posted this… earlier this evening a reseller called me and said “could you restore a domain back to June 20?” and I said “SURE, Virtualmin does auto-backups for the last 3 months”… so I restored and 2 mins later told her to check it… then she said “oh no, there was an order and we’ve lost it, can you restore the order?”

I laughed to myself after cursing under my breath, then replied that I would do a restore from last backup, which was only 3 hours before… and once again… Virtualmin was the star… the order was restored as well and they were quite pleased. All this in just 5 mins of time!!!

Everyone, please consider “going Pro” or make donations… these guys deserve it!!! : )

Nice to see jimdunn that it won’t let you down too :+1:

Besides normal daily backups, I also do 1 or multiple times a day (depending on the website) a backup op the DB only. So for you the whole restore works fine, but in some cases only a DB restore is a nice bonus option too.

I challenge anyone to find a better server-backup system than VirtualMin’s. It’s got everything, even direct S3 access. And a thoughtful, straightforward UI. It has saved me several times. It’s the “quiet achiever”. I’m grateful the developers have shared it with us. Bravo.

All I can say is Virtualmins backup is the Bee’s Knees
I have it backup daily and send the backups to VPS I have. I have daily backups stored in directories with the backup date. Saved my skin many times.

The first time I learned about this idiomatic expression was from Keith Speaking Academy!

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words and suggestions to go Pro!

Yes indeed! restores, upgrades or migrations are a lot less painful.
Its gotten better too. After installing a new OS on a new VPS, I did the install script, put in the S3 details and did “restore all”. 10 webservers up and running with no issue.

Out of curiosity, do you know what the issue was with timeshift?

I don’t know for sure, I have to be honest that I never did a restore with timeshift before, I just had it running for extra safety once. But after the timeshift restore all the permissions where mixed up, but this could be the result of me messing up permissions in the first place. It was one big mess, so a clean install was the best way getting out of it.

So true man , agree with you
