Out of the box installation with the script install.sh does not install the module ‘system logs rs’ on debian 12. How can I post install the module?
It is listed in the ‘unused modules’ and I can even export it from the webmin configuration modules feature. I also tried ‘refresh modules’.
I guess some basic linux log programs are missing.
Any suggestion and help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
That means it is installed, it is just unavailable because the software it works with (rsyslog) is not installed.
You do not need to have rsyslog installed. You do not need System Logs RS, because logs are mostly now in the journal, and you should just use the journal to look at your logs (System Logs will show you that).
So, what are you trying to do that makes you think you need System Logs RS?
Mostly it is mail.log, fail2ban.log, access.logs of several hosted sites.
System Logs RS gave me a good overview with one click of all the logs I am interested in.
The endless pull-down of the ‘View Journal’ in ‘lines of’ is not very practical since the logs I am interested in are at the end of the list.
By the way: Many of the countless items in ‘lines of’ do not show any content at all, their names are cryptic and of very seldom interest.
What is the reason that System Logs RS is disappearing? … and can I get it back or is there something I have not understood yet? I can understand that you want to provide all possible logs in the UI of webmin. But System Logs RS is like my favorite list I am missing now.
You can add regular text logs (and several regular text logs are included by default) in the System Logs module. Click Module Configuration and add the ones you want in Extra log files to show.
I already said. It is for managing rsyslog in addition to viewing logs. If you don’t have rsyslog installed, it will be in unused modules. If you want it to appear you can install rsyslog, but for just viewing logs, you don’t need it.
