Do we fall for this hype?
What are your thoughts on this.
Seems the benefits are negliible.
Apparenty SSD hates being formatted. Not an expert obviously.

SSD for boot drive but HDD for storage
SSD hates being formatted? You mean for preparing a filesystem?
I read somewhere that overwriting a SSD drive has a detrimental affect on it? Like you can only do it so many times, I think I got a warning over some software I was using a few years ago.
Yes true a SSD has a lifespan, in Server operations use enterprise grade.
Consumer grade SSD will not last long in enterprise environment.
Don’t you just love marketing.
I did a HND in Agriculture when younger at Edinburgh Uni SAC, as well as IT I did a Marketing module … how to rip off consumers basically.
Totally legal and taught to students.
Well corporations are not know for telling the exact truth in advertising campaigns
First rule for consumer: Buyer Beware
Some company that publishes their records for HD failures basically says SSD’s fail sooner but, in aggregate, has about the same life expectancy. Got this from /. a while back if you want to do the search.
But, are SSD’s a faster over a normal web traffic route? Probably not. ![]()
For processing Data read, write) yes better experience but correct, not going to speed up a router
Myself I think the whole Internet is getting or already is a bit silly now.
I can see me spending my retirement in this area of pointing out the crap that keeps coming at us. It is getting beyond sense.
I see Bernes Lee keeping his head down these days and Linus looking like a fatted calf. Where has Alex Cox disappeared to, I know, Wales, coming home soon bro.
really? i have not noticed. seems hard to get a laptop these days with HDD (or enough usb ports)
Indeed. Says it all. Prolly a load of BS before. Marketing.
Rust Disks (HDD) should only be used for long term storage.SATA SSD are old tech and should not be used. they can only handle 1 write/read operation at a time.NVMe SSD are the way forward.
TL;DR using NVMe SSD for your webserver is a must.
Thank you Shoulders …
Not true.
SSD do not like getting Zero filled only because it adds additional wear to the drive but it does not damage it or cause it any other problems.
Zero filling a SSD over and over will increase the wear rate, but now and again is fine.

SATA Interface SSD’s, use a couple at home because I had them left over and felt like being cheap ![]()
Would never run SATA SSD for a business, dead technology.
My home gaming pc which is currently my main work station as well has a 1Tb ssd as c drive with win 11 but I have two other 1 Tb hdd, one for some games and the other for other data plus external hdd. Personally the performance for me is not noticable. I aways try to install games on the ssd because they say its faster.

My home NAS has 4 4TB Rust Disks (RED Drives) SATA, fast enough for me and got the drives new for a great price. They have served me well BUT when the time comes to upgrade the NAS it will be at least NVME for the boot
@CTS I actually have 4 4tb red drives but was not using them so I pulled them for now.
Are you using TrueNAS.
@Le_Gallois if you use a gen 4 or gen 5 nvme you will notice a massive difference.
A SATA SSD is still limited for the SATA bus.
Yeah, old timer here happy with my PC at the moment. Wish I was rich eh! 32gb with rtx 3060 17 10700 not the best but does most.
@shoulders
Synology NAS with DiskStation Manager (DSM)
Old model , still going strong though and just use it in my 1-2-3 backup for personal stuff.
If it was business I would have invested in newer model by now for sure
