Sent Mail and Sent folders

One issue I’ve seen is mail clients like Thunderbird and Outlook will create sent folders with their own names, even if a similarly named one already exists!

I’d be interested to know if anyone is seeing duplicates even on a fresh install of Virtualmin with no other mail clients.

Count me in, I’m seeing this too.

Both sent and sentmail folders were created on a new user and on a fresh install. There were no additional mail clients used other than usermin.

Usermin used the sentmail folder. The sent folder was not being used by usermin however, it was present in the folder list.

I later installed the roundcube client script and found it uses the sent folder, which was also created when the user was created. I tried with my mail client on my mac and it also used the sent folder with no option to change which folder to use.

I’ve been recently moving things from a server so I’ve been looking at newly created accounts for comparisons. I’ve opened them in Usermin. No extras that I’ve seen. My install is 3 to for weeks tops.

Mine is exactly the same only it creates one more folder Sent Mail (No client connected).
When I connect a client Thunderbird it uses the sent folder for send mails and cannot find anywhere the Sent Mail folder to use it.
I can find all other files which I create on my own.
My installation is a few weeks old on a clean server.
Sent Mail folder is “Folder type: Sent mail file”
Sent file is “Folder type: File under /home/*****/homes/eshop/Maildir”
Usermin uses the Sent Msail by default and the Sent configured Configuration (screenshot)
This is why I have created this thread.
I will create a new server to check is this issue is still exist and re-inform you.

Usermin shows “Sent mail” but this is from the folder:

root@main:/home/something/homes/remote0/Maildir# grep -ri sent grep: dovecot.list.index.log: binary file matches subscriptions:Sent

So it looks like usermain is adding the ‘mail’ part.

So I continue.
New Server new Virtualmin installation the same behavior.
This server is build just to test this issue and has only one domain configured.
Virtualmin configuration

as mentioned by @Joe Default settings

Result (No email client connected) Sent and Sent mail folders
Screenshot 2023-03-08 at 9.03.05 AM

So in conclusion 2 servers one of them created today. No mail client involved. The same behavior.

Where do INBOX and spam get specified? This is a fairly new account but I don’t see the extra sent in Usermin.

root@main:/home/x/Maildir# cat subscriptions
Trash
Drafts
Sent
root@main:/home/x/Maildir#

drwxr-x--- 12 fight fight 4.0K Mar 5 22:41 ..
drwx------ 8 fight fight 4.0K Mar 4 20:49 .
drwx------ 5 fight fight 4.0K Mar 4 20:49 .Drafts
drwx------ 5 fight fight 4.0K Mar 4 20:49 .Sent
-rw-r--r-- 1 fight fight 18 Mar 4 20:49 subscriptions
drwx------ 5 fight fight 4.0K Mar 4 20:49 .Trash
drwx------ 2 fight fight 4.0K Mar 4 20:49 cur
drwx------ 2 fight fight 4.0K Mar 4 20:49 new
drwx------ 2 fight fight 4.0K Mar 4 20:49 tmp

Here it is

cd /home/xxxx/homes/dentist/Maildir/

spam is showing up in the user accounts but not the main. Still though I see no “Sent mail”, just sent. The OP is seeing “Sent” and Sent mail" In spite of seeing “Sent mail” in Usermin I only see a folder for “Sent”. So the question is where does the “mail” get added?

root@main:/home/doctor/homes/optometrist/Maildir# grep -ir sent * grep: dovecot.index.cache: binary file matches grep: dovecot.list.index.log: binary file matches subscriptions:Sent
