Self Introduction + heads-up re Q localhost Maildirs

Hello people!

I have been pretty happy with a CLI for many decades (mild OCD means I want to know how everything works!) but it is late in life and there is still so much to do! - so adminning since Linux kernels 0.9 and using Qmail- → Netqmail → Indimail since the beginning, I have now moved my mail / list server out of the house and have had to make lots of changes, update OSes on all the machines, re-arrange what all the machines are doing and rsync TBs of stuff around for backups etc.

So, instead of rsyncing my very large personal Maildir and other Maildirs offsite too - I had the idea that I would:

  1. Deal with urgent mail on the off-site server immediately (conveniently they use RCM too!) and also tag whatever spam that gets through and delete unwanted stuff there too.

  2. Use fetchmail or something daily and dump all the mails still wanted into my local Maildirs using maildrop as usual (3012 Maildir subdirs and counting . . ).

  3. Install Dovecot and RCM or Mutt locally to continue to manage things.

However, then I thought I might be able to use rsync or something to get the mails from the off-site server in a more comfortable way - that thought led to me thinking (in line with my current attempt to reduce as much unnecessary work as possible) that there might be a nicer way to do all this so I Googled “reading Maildir directories” and found WebMin!

Now WebMin is very nice and works brilliantly (so far) but to my surprise it appears that I not only can view my Maildirs but maybe even use WebMin to be my local email client!?

Anyway, this is all very exciting but I can’t get viewing of the local Maildir going ATM so if, after looking at the docs doesn’t work (“If all else fails, read the documentation!”), “I’ll be back!”

Thanks to all the developers!

Phil.

Usermin would be a more appropriate tool for a webmail client (that’s what it is, with some other stuff). Webmin can read mail, and you can write mail, but it’s not intended to be a mail client, it’s for administration purposes.

If you’re using Virtualmin there’s also a Roundcube installer, but I personally use Usermin when I need a webmail client (and Thunderbird when I’m on my desktop or laptop).

That would be Usermim through which you can access your mailbox. The webmail client of Webmin is called Usermim.

There is also Virtualmin and Cloudmin. You could Google those.

Edit: oh, Joe has replied already. I’ll type faster next time.

Thanks guys! The number of “mins” is a bit confusing but I am still in the middle of a LOT of backups etc ATM so I will check out those options over the weekend . .

OK, back again after a large amount of re-organisation!

I understand what you mean by suggesting “UserMin” but it is convenient for admin stuff to use WebMin and there under the “Servers” menu there is a “Read User Mail” - ATM I just want a quick lookup of what I have in my old Maildir while I continue to gradually move to the offsite RCM setup on a hosted cPanel.

On the config screen I have typed “Maildir” in:

“User mail file directory”

However, I am confused by other stuff - the

“Mail file directory style”

doesn’t have an option:

Username/Maildir

although there is

“Maildir”

in

“Mail directory in user home directories”

but I still can’t get it to work . .

Suggestions appreciated!

Phil.
