Scheduled backups failing - manual foreground run working

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS
Webmin version 2.510
Virtualmin version 7.40.1
Webserver version Apache

Over the last three days, my scheduled backups have not been completing, causing the backups to fail:

Backup failed! See the progress output above for the reason why. Total backup time was 04 minutes, 00 seconds

Waiting for the number of running backups to drop below the system limit of 3 ..
. gave up waiting after 240 seconds

If I cancel the running backups I can then run a backup manually and this completes and works fine if I run it in the foreground in virtualmin. However, if I select to run it in the background it appears to never complete.

I can’t see anything in the webmin action logs or the virtualmin backup logs, I guess they don’t get written until the job completes?

I only run the free version, I have noticed a few posts about the wordpress workbench, but as a free user I don’t have this pro feature.

Could anyone kindly point me in the right direction please?

are there many WP sites on the VM - if not then this addition is not going to be of much use anyway.

also, are you setting the “action on error” option in your backups

to halt immediately? which should allow the log to be at least writen to on failure so you can trace where it fails

Yeah it’s set to halt immediately already.

I’ve just run the identical backup in foreground and it’s worked, however, if I run it in the background it doesn’t seem to even finish the first site.

Thank you!

what? and still nothing in the logs? is a log being created but the error/cause not being written to it :ghost:

Yup, very strange. I stopped the running jobs and rebooted the server and it appears to be ok now, so I guess something was going stale somewhere!
