I’m trying to configure Mozilla Thunderbird for incoming and outgoing mail.
everything is great with incoming mail.
When i try to send mail through Thunderbird I get this error:
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.7.1 name@mai.lv: Relay access denied. Please check the message recipients and try again.
I have rechecked spelling many times and tried different addresses but I keep getting the same error.
I don’t know the specifics about doing that in Thunderbird – that best I can offer is to just poke around in the Accounts Settings options, look into the Outgoing SMTP area, and make sure that there’s a username and password setup to authenticate.
Unfortunately, I don’t use Thunderbird, so I can’t be more specific than that
For checking the email log – you can either log in using SSH, and use a tool such as “less” to look at the logs.
Or, you can go into Webmin -> System -> System Logs, and browse the logs from there.
OK, so is the outgoing mail username and password the same as incoming mail’s ?
Although The persong who manages servers told me that they don’t use authentication for outgoing mails, so I didn’t provide username and password. maybe he’s wrong, but he hasn’t gotten back to me about this problem…
If he is wrong is there a place where I can look for smtp authentication username and password ?

Well, there’s two options:
He’s wrong about requiring a username and password for outgoing email
Your server is an open relay that allows anyone (including spammers) to use it to send emails anywhere on the Internet
Based on all the “Relay access denied” messages, I’m assuming we’re dealing with #1 above
So yes, the outgoing password is the same as the incoming password.
Just make the outgoing username/password the same as the incoming one in Thunderbird, and you should be good to go!
