Hi all, I really hope some one might be able to help me, im trying to set up emails on my server and then download the emails via outlook express on my pc, or phone mail server.
ive been on this for weeks and its driving me mad.
my setup. debian 6 64bit virtualmin, webmin and postfix the outlook.
i really need a step by step of how to setup my email account and server.
i must have followed 20 guides only for it not to work. the main thing i need is to gonfig with outlook so i will need to also know the in and out mail servers as there is no information on the anywhere. i nice step by step from installing virtual server to ending up at outlook would be great, and help at all would be much appreciated. pease help. thanks in advance
Well, there’s a lot of different ways to set things up.
What setup are you using, and what errors do you see when you try to send/receive email? Perhaps we can troubleshoot the problem that you’re seeing there.
thanks andreychek the error I see in mail alias unknown error and the mail is returned back, but i am not bothered about fixing that what i will do is a fresh install of virtualmin and webmin. all i need is a step by step to setup mail. as all the ones i found on the internet do not work for me, not sure why. I would be willing to give permission to my server in order to fix this issue its driving me crazy. been on this for 2 weeks just trying to fix the mail issue.
I want to use my own server for mail and not the hosting company (uk2) that is hosting my dedicated server as they have limits on there mail accounts.
if you could tell me from scratch that would be great. from fresh install of virtualmin and webmin i goto virtualmin and create a new virtual server say 12345 .com with the user 12345 I then accept all the below in the features section of the setup
Setup website for domain?
Accept mail for domain?
Setup Webalizer for web logs?
Create MySQL database?
Setup spam filtering?
Create Webmin login?
Enable DAV logins?
IP address and forwarding
Setup virus filtering?
Enable AWstats reporting?
Allow Mailman mailing lists?
in the advanced options i leave as they are default
Contact email address= Administrator’s mailbox
Group for mailbox users= Automatic
Prefix for mail usernames= Automatic
Default database name= Automatic
this is the stage i am at for the 20th time i keep trying to set the mail then it dont work and the i format and reinstall os and virtualmin and webmin and try again. nothin i try works.

You don’t need to format and start over whenever you run into a problem – if you’re having a problem, just let us know what it is and we can help
We don’t have a step by step guide to setting up email, but that’s because things should usually be working pretty well when you perform a typical installation.
What you described in your post above sounds just fine… the only thing that you actually have to have enabled for mail to work when setting up a Virtual Server is the “Mail for Domain” feature.
I’d suggest not following any of the guides you’re seeing out there, as they may be making things a little harder by causing you to change some defaults.
Just let us know what specific issues you’re seeing and we can work through them.
You can see email related errors in the mail log, which is either /var/log/maillog or /var/log/mail.log, depending on your distro.
ok thanks for that, i will look in the logs and get back to you. I think the problem is with the mx records for my domain im not sure how to set them up to work with postfix. only a guess but it would explain alot.
Under most cases, the MX record should be setup correctly by default… but that’s one of the things we can look into.
One thing you could do is to go to intodns.com, and input your domain name there. It will run a DNS report, including checking your MX record.
You can review the output there and see if anything appears awry.
