Turn out the user postgres needs write permissions to the backup directory. Originally I thought it was root being denied access to Postgresql on Debian.
Bottom line, there is nothing obvious in the UI to alert the user that the user is postgres and the chosen directory needs to have postgres permissions. Maybe this goes under the radar because if you choose ‘create directory’ it gets the proper permissions?
Finally took some time today to figure out why this was happening.
