Hello again,
trying not to get sidetracked this time

I am moving domains from one server to another, because the original server is breaking down and giving outages more an more.

The new server is located on its own subnet where I have 5 IP addresses that I can use.

So I’ve enabled 3 of the 5 addresses on this new server

these are public IP addresses, so the the sake of privacy lets name them:
192.168.171.220,
192.168.171.221 and
192.168.171.222.

220 is the server itself so I can connect to it on port 10000.

221 is a general server address where I have shared servers.
222 is a “dedicated” address I use for 1 server only.

That 222 (192.168.171.222) address has some issues.
I restored a backup from the original server
which had a local IP address like 192.168.2.100 and there is has been running for weeks without a problem (except for the frequent outages that occur on this server).

When I restored it, the Postfix Mail Server that worked on 192.168.171.221 stopped working all together, not SMTP connection whatsoever: TCP Error 10060 (Connected host has failed to respond ).
On any address 220, 221 and 222.
So it was not responding on any address.

I’ve encountered this one before, I resorted a previous backup of the Postfix settings, and got it back online again, working on 221.

Moved the domain once more, without the mail server settings, and it was still working.
tried to connect to the 222 address, and no reaction, The I tried to see if I could connect though the 221 address, and that worked.

So I got this working now.
And it looks solid, but now I’m wondering why doesn’t Postfix only work on 1 IP Address?

it doesn’t work on the 220 or the 222 address .
it only works on the 221 address.

If I look in the Server Processes list I can see: smtp, enabled internet (transport type), not private, unprivileged, chrooted, with default Max process.

if I check for the value of this I see:

Listen to host address is set to any address.

There is aso a smtps that is set exactly the same.

I’m happy I got it to work but still wondering, can I get it to work on the 222 address ??
(would be Nice for the reverse DNS to work properly  )

This server is fully updated with the latest updates for Ubuntu and Virtualmin/Webmin.

as always, , thanks for reading and your input on this.

Okay, I have it fixed now.

For some reason my firewall didn’t accept the MAC-address for all the (virtual)addresses I’m using on this NIC.

So, now I’ve setup multiple NIC’s, for some reason It moved NIC name to the newest one ??

anyway, while I was contemplating my sanity> I figured it out.
Edited the config and moved the right IP address to the right NIC.
And voila.. now it works flawlessly.

Right IP with correct domain, everything checks out.

Still don’t know why it got so out of hand and..
who ever thought this is the simplest way to permit access so your server is accessible on the internet.

I mean it’s a public IP4 subnet..

So it’s solved, not a problem with Webmin/Virtualmin or Ubuntu.

It was in the end the firewall not cooperating.
and faulty documentation one mac for several (virtual) addresses doesn’t work in the end … putting me on the wrong foot.. several times..
