Postfix Issue - Receiving but no delivery to mailboxes?

Hi! So another day, another problem to overcome!
I recently attempted to lessen “backscatter” spam, and inadvertently botched something. I followed a couple of GeoIP blocking guides, and it stopped any and all mail from reaching my server at all. I’ve unwound what I “thought” was all the alterations, however, now the server receives the emails, but doesn’t deliver them to the mailboxes of all domains & users. I attempted install of postscreen, and GeoIP Postfix Block.

Here is a copy of my main.cf
#See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version

#Debian specific: Specifying a file name will cause the first
#line of that file to be used as the name. The Debian default
#is /etc/mailname.

I think I’m going to take backup of configs before I twiddle with any more LOLOLOL.

Cheers for your inevitable responses, and I’d applaud any name calling due to my marvellous ability to right ol’ make a mess of any and all things Virtualmin :stuck_out_tongue:

We need to see the logs.

First, the relevant entries from the mail.log for one specific lost mail (or, maybe the journal for Postfix) to make sure it is making it to procmail, and then the procmail log to see what procmail is doing with it (assuming it’s actually making it to procmail).

procmail.log for today is empty :frowning:

We don’t need/want the whole mail log. Just the entries related to one mail that gets lost.

So I still have a huge issue with backscatter, but I’ve dug through the extesively spam bloated logs and found:

Is the issue something to do with alias database?
Muchos Gracias!

You named your server the same exact name as a domain you are hosting virtual mail for. You shouldn’t do that.

This is covered in the docs (linked from the download page under the link “fully qualified domain name”):

Fully qualified domain name

If your system does not have a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), the installer will stop and ask you to choose one. This is mandatory because many services rely on having a fully qualified domain name in order to function. Mail, in particular, but some Apache configurations and many of the Virtualmin-created configuration files, also require a valid fully qualified domain name to function correctly. A fully qualified domain name is one of the form “srv1.virtualmin.com”, or simply “virtualmin.com” (but do not use a name you’ll be hosting in Virtualmin). We recommend you choose a name that is not one for which you will be receiving mail, in order to simplify later configuration. A good choice is to use a name server designator, such as “ns1.virtualmin.com”. Some customers also choose something like “host1.virtualmin.com” or “primary.virtualmin.com”. Any of these would be valid and would satisfy the install script and the services that rely on this option. The install script will add this name to /etc/hosts, which will satisfy all local services. It is even better if this name resolves correctly when looked up from outside of the system–this requires the name be added to your DNS zone for the second level domain. If the Virtualmin server you are installing will be the authoritative name server for this zone, you can later use Webmin to add a record for this name to the zone.

Also note that’s wholly unrelated to your backscatter (or spam) issue that started this topic. If my answer doesn’t provide enough guidance to fix it, please open a new topic to discuss the new issue. (But, really, just name your server something that doesn’t conflict with a domain you’re hosting virtually…Virtualmin manages virtual hosts, including virtual mail. By naming your server the same as a domain in Virtualmin that receives mail, you told Postfix that is is virtually hosting the domain and also that the server itself is the domain. That doesn’t make sense! Postfix injured itself in its confusion!)

I’m aware the backscatter is caused by exterior involvement, its just another issue I need to learn about and tend to. I’ve changed the servers hostname to an unhosted subdomain, that is recorded in my freedns.afraid.org account, and added to the A names in Virtualmin DNS also!

Something so simple. Oddly the server didnt have issues with the FQDN being the same as the hostname UNTIL I began tweaking to resolve issues with backscatter - entirely stopping in and outgoing mails. Then undoing my changes, and expecting it to work as it once did, but it didnt.

Thanks Joe! I guess I’ll go find and break something else, and be back shortly to bother you again :innocent:
