Podman frontend suggestion

I’ve read that the next version of Virtualmin will have some sort of containerization support. I’ve since decided to go with Podman and would like a suggestion on a frontend (not portainer) that would be complementary to the next VM update. Which frontend does the team recommend? Will I even need a frontend after the next update?

Thx all!

Define “frontend”?

Something very much like portainer, just not actual Portainer. Something that allows creation, deploying, stop/start, deleting, etc. of containers, volumes, and images in a web based frontend so I can access it from both mobile devices and PC.

If Virtualmin is going to have this capability, then I’ll wait for that. Thx @Joe!

I hope there will be a circled checkbox to choose docker, or is podman 1:1 same syntax?

I don’t understand why they would force podman when like 99% of all container self hosted image stuff is docker not podman.

A real “frontend” for me would be to have an interface to make it work with apache proxypass and websockets immediately. Not just start/stop. And it should have an editor to add docker compose stacks. :smiling_cat_with_heart_eyes:

Yes, that’s roughly what we’re working on for the container (Podman/Docker) support in Virtualmin Pro.

Docker will also be supported, but Podman will be the default and the recommended option. You’ll have to take some extra steps to switch to Docker. But, yes, Podman is compatible with Docker in most ways that would matter, including the command line syntax..

Because Podman is a technically superior implementation and it is entirely Open Source.

But, we’re not forcing anyone to do anything. You can use anything you want. But, we want to provide the best user experience we can and work with Open Source tools and ecosystems.

Are you accepting beta testers for this?

We don’t really do that. We get a new feature into a state where we think it’s ready, and then we let anyone that wants to try it try it out. This one is not ready for that, but probably will be pretty soon.
