Hi all,

I am getting the above err, but cannot see that triggers it or what was (not) backed up.
Here the conf and the log (I only put some of the servers, all would be too much and all log entries look pretty much the same :°)

If you read through the forums there has issues with debian 13 that have been fixed in virtualmin 8, current virtualmin version is 8.1.0, so it may be worth upgrading to virtualmin 8, to maybe fix this and other bugs

Aha, cheers, thanks for pointing that out Jim! :slight_smile:
This box usually auto-updates itself and all packages, but following your hint I saw that there was an issue w. virtualmin repos that I had to fix. That’s why it was “stuck” at 7.x
Updated to 8, ran backup and…:

47 virtual servers backed up successfully
10 Virtualmin system configurations backed up successfully

Backup is complete. Final size was 4.91 GiB.

I’m afraid I have to re-open this one…
Operating system Debian Linux 13
Webmin version 2.653
Virtualmin version 8.1.0 GPL

The backup is set up as scheduled. When I call it manually, it runs fine. When it is called by cron, it - still/again - generates the message:

Nothing apparent in the logs though. What is causing this issue?

Hello Hans! Good to see you back!

Have you checked “Backup and Restore ⇾ Backup Logs”? Is there anything useful there? Could you share that log here?

Which features do you have enabled on the “System Settings ⇾ Features and Plugins” page? Do you mind providing a screenshot?

Also, which features do you have enabled for the domain’s scheduled backup? Do you mind showing a screenshot as well?

When you say it works when run manually, are you referring to clicking the “Backup” button in the “Actions” column for the existing scheduled backup on the “Backup and Restore ⇾ Scheduled Backups” page, then clicking the “Backup Now” button at the bottom of the page that opens? Or do you mean using the one-shot backup on the “Backup and Restore ⇾ Backup Virtual Servers” page?

The command only shows problems w. IPv6 (which I don’t actively use). Here are only 8 of the 47 servers listed, half of which are included in the backup, while the other half failed:

Hans, alright, I believe I have found and fixed the root cause of your issue.

Your system had been using older repositories and consequently never received the later fixes for the Virtualmin PowerDNS plugin.

After upgrading to the Virtualmin 8 repository, the outdated Virtualmin PowerDNS plugin remained installed because its latest package was missing from the new repository.

I have now added the latest webmin-virtualmin-powerdns package to the Virtualmin 8 repository.

Please install latest package updates using “System ⇾ Software Package Updates” page or run:

apt update && apt upgrade

This should update the Virtualmin PowerDNS plugin and resolve the scheduled backup issue, because the 41 reported failures correspond exactly to the 41 virtual servers using PowerDNS.

After updating, please run the scheduled backup again and confirm that it completes successfully.

Ah, I see. Okay, I just released Virtualmin PowerDNS 1.13.2 to address this issue. Could you please install the latest update and give it another shot?

Still, we might want to do a deeper rework of the PowerDNS plugin in the future. It would help to know your workflow, how you are using it, and what you expect from it.
