New Virtualmin Software Updates module version 4.5

Howdy all,

I’ve just rolled out version 4.5 of the security-updates module, which is the module that provides the list of available updates on the “System Information” page in Virtualmin. The only change in this version (I think), is that it will always list available bash upgrades as a Virtualmin update (meaning it’ll appear on the System Information page, rather than having to click through to the module itself). Even though this is not traditionally considered a web hosting related package, this recent security issue in bash makes it very important that people running any of the many exploitable services (Apache is one of them, when CGI script execution is enabled, but there are many others) update immediately.

The goal here is to make sure as many Virtualmin users as possible upgrade bash as soon as possible.

So, if you’ve already upgraded to the patched bash version, you won’t see anything new…until another new bash package comes out to fix the several other security issues that have been discovered since the announcement of Shellshock.
