Mail folders moving issue

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version Rocky Linux 9.5
Webmin version 2.301
Usermin version 2.201

i had to delete all the files under .usermin/mailbox then have them recreate themselves by accessing each folder in usermin mail and now moving an email to any folder ends up in the wrong folder,
i tried deleting a couple of folders after moving emails to inbox then manually create them but when i select the new folder to move emails back they still go to wrong folder,
how to fix this please?

thx

Why? What problem were you trying to initially address that made you believe this was a good thing to do?

thatā€™s irrelevant, can you answer the question?

Wow.

I would delete the ā€œvirtual serverā€ and re-create it, or I would delete it and restore it from a backup.

We need the whole picture. Many long frustrating threads include the phrase, ā€˜you should have said that originallyā€™. Certainly if something WAS broken prior, it is relevant. But good luck.

Sorry to say but youā€™re wrong: What led to the deletion is, indeed, irrelevant. The question is: Is there a way to restore the original folders?

I also donā€™t have the ultimate answer to hand, but vote for jimdunnā€™s approach.

Generally these things are done to solve a problem. Restoring the original folders may be impossible if there was indeed a problem prior. It may be the reason it isnā€™t working now. So, no, it isnā€™t wrong to ask. It is wrong not to. But, Iā€™m out of this. Iā€™m not gonna spend time remotely troubleshooting without complete information. You are free to do as you wish.

Deleting the whole virtual server is overkill.

If you really want to delete stuff, start with the smallest thing. In this case, I guess the user with the broken mail folders would be the thing to delete and recreate.

But, Iā€™d like to know what ā€œdeleting a couple of foldersā€¦then manually create themā€ means. In Usermin? In some other mail client? In the File Manager or in a shell session? Mail folders are magic, and you have to go through a mail client to get reasonable behavior when operating on them (unless you know all the little fiddly details and get them rightā€¦they are just Maildirs in the user home dir, so itā€™s not impossible to manually work with them, but you have to know how).

I am not convinced either.

Usermin is complicated. I would start in Webmin -> Usermin Configuration as that should indicate just what you are dealing with by choosing to delete component folders.

I disagree. I think the suggestion to delete/restore the virtual-server was a good suggestion ā€“ no, it was a GREAT suggestion.

Here was the original problem, and I quote:

ā€œmoving an email to any folder ends up in the wrong folder ā€¦ when i select the new folder to move emails back they still go to wrong folderā€

And when someone tried to information-gather, the response was ā€œthatā€™s irrelevant.ā€

So, I think to myself, hmm, how should I answer, how can we solve this and prevent future issues with that virtual-server?

ANSWER: ā€œPAVE OR NUKE AND RE-CREATE OR RESTORE!ā€

It seemed to be the only logical suggestion when a conversation is not allowed because itā€™s deemed irrelevant.

I am deeply (cough) sorry for possibly causing them to have to start from scratch. I myself have actually learned many things over the years by starting from scratch. The suggestion to ā€œrestore from backupā€ was doubly-good because you learn how to RESTORE (something I didnā€™t know for a long time) or you learn to MAKE BACKUPS if you donā€™t have them (also something I didnā€™t do for a long time).

I also learned to not tinker with my server, thus allowing me to have no issues with my Virtualmin dedicated server for year now. I know some people are bothered with me saying this, but ā€œevery 5 years I lease a new server, install the latest Debian, migrate Virtualmin data from the old server, change DNS, and go 5 more years without issues.ā€

I think the only issue Iā€™ve had in the last 15 years was some Dovecot config file with errors because Iā€™ve migrated so many times. So I wrote a script that runs on startup to fix itā€¦ but other than thatā€¦ nothing. With other control-panels I had to reboot every night to solve instabilitiesā€¦ but with Virtualmin I just reboot every 30 days. One time, after a migration, I forgot to configure the reboot and it ran for 6-7 months before I noticed. I probably didnā€™t need to enable ā€œreboot every monthā€ but I still remember ā€œthe olā€™ days.ā€ Maybe the next time I migrate Iā€™ll stop rebooting altogether and see how long it goes for fun!

Virtualmin has made my ā€œweb-hosting lifeā€ SO MUCH EASIER than other control-panels that would eventually crash my machine. I strongly encourage people to purchase a Virtualmin PRO license or make a donation. I canā€™t imagine how much frustration I would be facing without the set of Virtualmin/Webmin/Usermin tools on my server.
