Ubuntu Linux 22.04.2, Kernel/CPU Linux 5.15.0-69-generic on x86-64
Virtualmin version 7.5, Webmin version 2.021
Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6138 CPU @ 2.00GHz, 12 cores, 48GiB memory
See Dashboard display attachment, which shows the two different Disk Usage’s:
See Command Terminal attachment, showing actual Disk Usage.
Dashboard Local disk space reading is indicating 62 GiB used / 883 GiB Free / 945 GiB total
Disk Usage drop-down area lists 883 GiB Free, 14 GiB Used, with 945 GiB Total.
From terminal, command df -m indicates 14GiB is correct disk space used.
This is not a huge problem, since I now know which disk usage reading is accurate. Not sure if there is already a resolution to this descrepancy, or if slated for update in future, or will be left “as is”?
On the bright side, I purged a lot of un-necesary files/logs…etc, and rebooted system before realizing the main dashboard local disk space usage was inaccurate.
Does add up nicely to the default 5% filesystem reserve though, so might be that Webmin is showing different values here, one with the reserve included.
I think there was a thread regarding this some time ago, but can’t seem to find it again right now.
Ilia made a change to accommodate reserved space, but I think it’s still wrong for different places in Webmin to disagree about how much disk space is used. One can argue about what is “right” (and we’re going to get people telling us we’re wrong no matter what we choose because you can always find a command that will give different values), but at the very least I think we should be consistent.
Yeah, I’m not gonna get in to the argument on what’s right or wrong because I’ve got my disk usage under control nonetheless, just mentioned what might cause the discrepancy
From what little bit I have read about tmpfs system, Shared memory (shm) it is usually set at 1/2 of the total real memory of the system. I have 48GB of RAM, so tmpfs should reserve around 24GB of disk space. The 960GB drive, after subtracting the reserved (shm) tmpfs, total available disk space should be at around 944GB total available (Virtualmin also has this). There are some smaller tmpfs locations reserved that actually knock this total available down to around 937GB, but we are splitting hairs. The 944GB available drive space minus the 14GB used drive space should provide the total free space, which should read around 930GB. Both dashboard areas indicate 882GB free disk space remaining. If one looks at the amount that this is off (48GB), this is indicative of a sign that may be reversed. Possibly the 24GB reserve value?
It just cracks me up that people sweat bullets over 3% or 5% or 8% of a drive in a report. You should never be using so much of your drive that a few percent one way or the other is going to make any difference to begin with. The whole point is moot.
Thanks for the reply Joe. I am fairly new to Virtualmin, and the comments are appreciated. I agree the panel should reflect disk values that are consistent in each area. There was a comment in another reply to this post that a lot of folks sweat disk space…as for me, the disk space is not an issue…just knowing that the values are consistent and relatively accurate are important. I’ll use a car speedometer as an example, as a gauge of your speed. If your speedometer is off by 5 or 8 percent, it might land you a ticket…so yeah it is important to have a good consistent reference. I can always go to my terminal and obtain the actual disk values, but then what is the point of having this info in the panel then? This likely is a low priority in the grand scheme of issues to resolve, but thanks for your valuable time and noting the inconsistency. Btw, I have Virtualmin on 2 other hosts (much smaller drives), and the values are spot on for the others.
