Just got 262 Updates in 4 days after updating -Checking to see if it's OK

I’ve just updated 4 days ago - I’m just concerned and thought I’d ask and make sure all is going ok as since I’ve been using Webmin and Virtualmin with the OS that is no longer supported and EOL Imminent (Centos Linnux) and started using Alma Linnux with the above set up I seem to be getting Updates almost every week - In the past I used to get some once a month or so, also I’ve NEVER had 262 Updates before and so thought I’d ask and make sure before I updated (just to make sure)
Would be nice if one of the staff would let me know

Why not view the updates and see what they are ? This is a difficult question to answer as it is possible that every installation can be different due to what has been installed. Looking at what is to be potentially installed may reassure you. An example of this if you have multiple php versions installed each version may have many updates so you can get to high numbers of updates very quickly.

I’m just concerned as ever since I got a new server and installed webmin, vitualmin with Alma Linux I’ve had a lot of updates - happening almost twice or sometimes 3 times a week and I just updated 4 days ago and now suddenly get as many as 262 (which as I said I’ve never had so many before) … thought best to check before I update

Perhaps someone who uses RHEL will shed some light on this but on my debian based systems there are numerous updates that can appear at very short intervals, normally smaller than this but can be that big if there is a big change. I notice glibc has changed which may trigger many updates. That said I guess this system is hosted at home as it appears to want to update a wireless network utility where a vps hosted in a data center doesn’t have a wireless interface perhaps provide more information on your setup

I have the same updates in my rocky linux install: it is the update from rocky Linux 9.4 to rocky Linux 9.5. It is the same in Alma Linux

Same, looks like a version update, Its not a issue to update.

But I get a error on update

In terminal I used dnf update --allowerasing allows it to go through.

Refresh Packages in GUI else the updates keeps showing.
System will need a reboot

Virtualmin should detect the OS update.

Those are not our packages. Webmin is showing you available updates from your system package manager (dnf in this case), which will include updates to any packages from your OS repositories, our repositories, and any third party repositories you have configured.

Please help me if possible giving me step by step to get only updates from your repositories - I’m sure that would include the Alma Linux updates as well?

No it won’t the virtualmin repository only holds virtualmin, all other software is held, in this case, the Alma linux repositories

Updates are good

There HAVE been an inordinate amount of updates over the past several weeks on the different operating systems my servers run on. Most recently appear to be related to PHP. The more versions of PHP you have on boxes the more updates you will see.

I have also noticed that as of Thursday, November 25, the overall traffic over several of my internet providers has slowed down more then 30%. Spot checking AWStats and other traffic mechanisms is not showing that kind of slowdown. My thought is that all these updates are reducing overall traffic. That’s not a bad thing either.

It puts my mind at ease that I am not the only one noticing this…

That’s to be expected if you have multiple php versions installed, you may now notice that you have php 8.4 installed also ( in a limited form) this is perhaps only true if yourusing the sury repro

Not trying to solve anything was just concerned about such a large amount of updates, I’ve never had this type of quantity or frequency of updates before when I had Centos OS now that I’ve switched to Alma - I was just concerned about this and thought I’d ask before I update - incase I mess anything up!
Anyways since then I hace updated it all and had a few quirks - which took me 2 days to sort out some were PHP related and there were others as well, I’ve managed to get it all up and running now - Thanks for all your help

I think it was just timing, you installed just before a large update
I’d be more worried if you didn’t get updates.
