a couple of days ago i installed Webmin/Virtualmin on 10.1 and the installation seemed to go very well, in spite of the EPEL issues at the time.
according to the RL forum, the reason the EPEL problems are all now resolved was due to the release of 10.1.
can anybody think of any reason i should continue with 10 and not just start out with 10.1?
note: the reason for my paranoia is on my current server, i went ahead and installed before rocky-linux & virtualmin/webmin were fully tested, and there were nagging little problems that Joe Cooper graceously helped me with. this time around, i want a very smooth and normal webmin install.
also a special shout-out thank-you to Ilia for his patience with me.
very wise suggestion indeed. i lived with a bad mistake of a bad virtualmin/webmin installation last time around and i want to avoid that again at all costs.
maybe better to start with 10.0, install webmin, then let dnf upgrade to 10.1 – thoughts?
I would say since you are at the start just use latest OS release.
I mean it happens anyway, fresh install of current OS then Webmin/Virtualmin , everything running great and then OS updates - 10.2-10.3-10.x
You should always run an up to date version of your OS. Minor version updates are usually not disruptive, and if they are, it is upstreams fault (sounds like they did have disruptions, and that’s annoying). But, the fact remains you should run up to date software.
Minor version changes are, according to semantic versioning guidelines, always compatible and non-disruptive. There should be no breaking changes.
If there’s a problem with what our code on 10.1 vs 10.0, tell us about it and we’ll fix it (though you are running a pre-release version of the Virtualmin installer and should not expect perfection).
i am sure you are mentally blocking the mess i made of my webmin install with the original release of rocky-linux, when you so graciously tried to help me. i would say my paranoia is more than justified.
the rocky-linux 10.1 test install went incredibly smoothly, so smooth that it was almost scary.
once again and as always, i am extraordinarily grateful for virtualmin/webmin and its community.
I’m like a goldfish, I have no idea what you’re talking about, though I believe you. Which is why I insist so much on people staying on topic, I can’t handle a bunch of context switches. I’m always responding to exactly what’s in front of me at all times. A good topic has everything I need to know in the title and first post, but also not really long (because if the topic rambles, odds are good I’m going to answer some random thing rather than the actual question).
