i just purchased a vps. and and it ready to log in. so, i tried to install virtual min
but it warns me that, bind and apache is already installed, which should not be. so, i contact support, but they told me all the ubuntu os comes with that. and there is no way they can overwrite it with different iso. as they don’t have it.
even they, mentioned even the original iso also have bind and apche installed.
what should i do now? should i cancel the vps plan and try other hosing? or what?
but though i am very novice to core vps/linux, but some software may have changed other config file, if i just uninstall that, could it be make any effect on the server/os?
BIND and Apache are not part of the operating system. They can be removed without impacting anything, other than getting rid of those packages.
Purging them gets rid of the configuration files, which is where we expect problems to happen. So, that’s probably the safest way to proceed.
I am leery of a hosting provider that doesn’t offer a base OS install image, and instead preinstalls a bunch of random stuff. It’s hard to know what else they’ve done that may cause problems.
If they just installed packages from the OS repositories and did nothing else, then it’s completely fine. If they installed custom versions of stuff or did any configuration changes beyond the stuff necessary for network connectivity and maybe their own local mirror of the OS repos, then it’s possible those changes will confuse the Virtualmin installer. We can’t anticipate every random thing someone could have changed.
Purging the offending packages is the safest way to insure: No custom packages, no custom configuration. So, do that.
Edit: Unless they’ve configured BIND as a local caching DNS resolver. I can’t imagine they would do that, though. It would indicate severe incompetence on their part, as systemd-resolved already provides caching DNS service on modern distros, without doing anything weird.
You can test with vultr, I would suggested the Cloud Compute - High performance is a good place to start as you can preload like $10 into the account, no need to commit to a monthly plan and then create and destroy servers to test Virtualmin as charging is done on a per hour rate.
Its a great playground testing and permanent service.
Tech support is first class and pretty quick.
Probably as a permanent service there are cheaper providers, I like there flexibility.
I can’t ever remember ever have an outage with them and I’ve been there at least 5 years.
I joined vultr when there was no blocked port 25 ( outbound smtp) but if you need to send out mail these days you need to request that port to be opened.
Pricing
I have 2 servers at the moment and you can see one test and if I destroy the server now the total cost for that server was .72c
