FTP login without the ".whatever" appended?

 If I "Add a Website Access FTP access user" the login that it creates is actually:

new-username.administration-group

 (I am not actually sure if it's the administration group, or administrator username, as my creation template uses the same for both.)

 What I would like to do is ftp in as just "new-username" and have full control of the given site's files.

 Is that possible?
