So this open-source thing called Home Assistant https://www.home-assistant.io/
is ridic’ popular worldwide for SmartHome control & programming. One of its inconveniences is having access to the system from outside one’s own intranet. Not everybody want’s to VPN into their own home to see if a smoke detector has gone off with their mobile app. The HA people do have tricks that help people running that software get a URL controlled by HA that gives the homeowner external access to their personal HA instance. They have other install methods like Docker.
A typical installation of HA is very similar to a Linux server install. HA takes over the device entirely and gives access to all the IoT via a website-type interface. Its minimum system requirements are ridiculously small.
There’s a lot of community “buy-in” when it comes to devices with full compatibility to their environment. There’s also a lot of crowdsourced hacking advice on how to solve problems; e.g. how to have your garage door open when your car gets near it, and close after your engine shuts off.
