Dovecot service issue - "unknown" state

ubuntu 22.04 lts
virtualmin 7.5

dovecot service does not start on boot (it is set to start on boot)
in bootup and shutdown, the running state is “unknown”
startup and state for dovecot.socket is “no/no”
i can start dovecot manually and access mail (imap)

today is the 10th and there’s no messages in /var/webmin/miniserv.error for today, but on the 9th i see…
Error: Systemd service dovecot.socket does not exist

so lots of DNSSEC and ‘connection refused’ stuff, which seems odd since i can receive mail at my runbox address when dovecot is running … also i would guess that these errors have nothing to do with dovecot not working properly/not starting on boot

other notes…

since DNS is done at the registrar, i disabled all the named* services - dunno if that was the right way to disable DNS or whether that plays into this problem or not, but i read a post by Joe indicating that named has nothing to do with dovecot

i’m lost…

Ubuntu 22 can be a little quirky at times as far as the bootup on startup goes.
Make sure your settings are as follows in the Bootup and Shutdown section.

In Webmin
System > Bootup and Shutdown >

dovecot yes yes
dovecot.service yes yes

dovecot.socket no no

You don’t need dovecot.socket because dovecot itself should be listening on the ports.
But you will see the Failed report in systemd and that is OK…

there is no dovecot.services, with or without the ‘s’, listed in bootup/shutdown module

is this a sys-d unit?

when i start dovecot, i see: Starting dovecot (via systemctl): dovecot.service.

so i reinstalled dovecot: apt reinstall dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d … to no avail - behavior is the same

If you can start dovecot with sudo systemctl start dovecot.service

Than enable it to startup on bootup

sudo systemctl enable dovecot.service

Edit:
Yes it should be dovecot.service without the “s” I will edit that above for reference.

Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/dovecot.service → /lib/systemd/system/dovecot.service.

and then i rebooted the server - dovecot.service still does not show up in bootup/shutdown, but at least dovect starts on boot as it should
