Contabo ignorant about difference between Webmin and Virtualmin

I received this email from Contabo today in which they suggest Webmin (and not Virtualmin) as an alternative to cPanel and Plesk. This is idiotic. Their content team knows nothing about web hosting control panels - even AI would not hallucinate so much.

Hello,

Thanks for the heads-up! That doesn’t sound good.

By the way, why did you reach out to them in the first place? Did they say that publicly too?

Do they say its for webhosting, or just a control panel.
Vultr also only offers webmin not virtuamin. But they offer alot other different preinstalled software in there “Marketplace”.

https://www.vultr.com/marketplace/categories/#web-host-control-panels

I got it from the newsletter that Contabo sent out today.

can any of these really be trusted to install Webmin/Virtualmin without screwing it up?

I thought the whole idea was to first get a clean OS then install Webmin/Virtualmin correctly.

As mentioned before, I struggled with what webmin/virtualin/usermin/filemin were all for.

Maybe Team Virtualmin should do some information packages/emails and send them to the various companies and educate them on what the various softwares do exactly. Especially how Virtualmin and Webmin work together etc

I think that’s off topic.

I don’t think so. Educate the ignorant for the benefit of virtualmin and It addresses the email the OP got.

but is that just advertising?

and potentially encouraging VM providers to do what they are already messing up. i would rather discourage them. if they really want to do it they can ask how and learn i am sure the team have more urgent things to spend their resources on

If the image that is deployed to a vps is from a clean OS with virtualmin installed from the install script surely it should work. My guess is whoever offers as a vps image webmin/virtualmin as an option doesn’t do that

Sorry, me not reading fully.
OP doesn’t really show all the email on there description of Webmin and they don’t advertise Virtualmin as a control panel that maybe because of the questions it asks during (Virtualmin) install, Webmin you don’t need that its just a control panel for admin of a OS.
Like I said Vultr only do webmin too. It maybe due to the need of a FQDN during the install.
Also the email doesn’t mention webhosting, just control panel, there is a difference.
I found a description on there web site.

Look, they have mentioned three products in that newsletter: cPanel, Plesk and Webmin. Two out of the three are web hosting control panels.

Contabo has misled their subscribers by listing cPanel and Plesk with Webmin. This is not a fair, apples to apples comparison. Had Contabo listed cPanel and Plesk with Virtualmin then it would be a fair, apples to apples comparison.

It is my conclusion that Contabo’s content team is ignorant about the different between Webmin and Virtualmin - they did not do their research. Your statement that they used a broader term ‘control panel’ to justify their apples to oranges comparision does not hold water.

My criticism of Contabo is limited to the work of their content team in the production of this particular newsletter. Contabo’s product offerings are satisfactory and I continue to use them - often to host Virtualmin servers.

I’m going to make a slightly bold claim here (and just to be clear, this is purely something I’ve made up before anyone starts having a go at me): who’s to say Contabo actually doesn’t know the difference between Webmin and Virtualmin? Maybe they just took the liberty of sort of mashing Webmin and Virtualmin together and decided to stick with Webmin as the product name. I suppose we’ll never know unless someone with a Contabo account sets up a test VPS and checks it for us. Come on, @calport, do it for the team!

You might not know this but not all VPS’s are used for webhosting, and webmin is ideal for that type of machine. I posted a screenshot of them stating this fact is not for hosting.
A preinstall Virtualmin I can not see will working well, alot easier using the script.
It is also not the job on Contabo to advertise Webmin, but they know its a excellent and free control panel for there VPS’s.
They should of just left it out of there email then you would be happy?

Thanks for this bit of information. I shall remember it always.

I do not wish to repeat myself yet again because I have already said all I have to say about the apples to oranges comparison being made by Contabo by their listing Webmin with cPanel and Plesk; instead of listing Virtualmin with cPanel and plesk, as Contabo should have in its newsletter if its content team was not ignorant and had done their research.

Apparently it bothers you, so why don’t you get in touch with Contabo and ask them? If anyone, they can tell you clearly what this is about and how it is meant.

if only, but I have my suspicion that most who offer it have alterior motivations and would steer well clear. but then I mistrust motives of most folk.

contabo is very slow and oversold/overprovisioned. Avoid them.
