One of my servers has been running multiple instances of collectinfo.pl, using a large amount of RAM. I’ve reviewed the previous closed topics on the archive site and in the forum here.
I tried to change the interval that collectinfo.pl runs, to 60 minutes. However the problem continued and when I went back to check the setting, it was back to 5 minutes. I set it to 60 2 more times, went back to webmin and then back to virtualmin to check the settings so, at least on my system, that setting doesn’t stick.
I changed it to Never Run and that seems to be sticking and the server is running OK at this point. But I need this running at some point, do I not?
Thanks for this, I actually wasn’t aware that I was so far behind and it wasn’t updating automatically. I guess since August of last year. I’ve run the script for configuring the repository and it’s up to date now. v 2.202.
I am using the UI at Virtualmin->System Settings->Virtualmin Configuration->Status Collection. But since I posted the original question I discovered that changing the setting seems to only become effective after running Re-Check Configuration. I did that last night without realizing it’s importance. I’ve now changed the Status Collection to 60 minutes, and it’s been running like that for about 3 hours. After changing that setting I killed the existing collectinfo.pl processes to start fresh. Performance instantly stabilized.
I’ve been monitoring it closely. A new pair of collectinfo.pl and webmincron.pl processes started about 70 minutes ago. They are still running. About 10 minutes ago a 2nd pair of those processes started, so now I have two pairs of those processes running. I took a screen shot of the original collectinfo.pl almost an hour into it’s process. I’ll try and upload it here. Knowing next to nothing about linux processes, I found it very interesting that almost an hour into it’s life, it’s “run time” was only 17:23.
I just checked again, all those two pairs of processes have now gone away. According to the Stats History/CPU, this happened about 3 minutes ago, with CPU going from about 75% to normal range of 5-50%.
