Best way to place user's emails on a mounted drive

We have a new email server, a VPS with an extra mounted storage. The reason to go this way is that as the number of users grow we can increase the size of the mounted storage and keep the based SSD drive for the system.
Initially our emails were hosted under /home/domainname/homes/users

I am just wondering what would be the best practice with the new extra volume. Shall we just make a /home/domainname/ folder under it and change the home location of that virtual host to this place? And shall I just set the permissions of the /home/ dir on the mounted storage exactly as it is on the host drive? owned by root?

Any hints will be highly appreciated.

Move all of /home/* to the new storage, and mount the new storage on /home. This is not merely best practice, it is the only reasonable option. Everything else is going to be a bunch of mess you have to manage forever.
