Being hammered - "rsyslog"?

while just trying to find out why a VS has slowed down to almost a standstill… I log in and am immediately (and surprisingly) taken to Webmin System -> System Logs which is filling up ar=t a scary rate with

rsyslogd[614]: action ‘action-5-builtin:omfile’ suspended (module ‘builtin:omfile’), retry 0. There should be messages before this one giving the reason for suspension. [v8.2112.0 try https://www.rsyslog.com/e/2007 ]

what is module “builtin:omfile”?

maybe this will help ?

interesting, but why has it happened all of a sudden?

Note that rsyslog is not a part of a Virtualmin system on any currently supported operating system version. It can be installed, but you don’t need it. It provides no utility.

Classic “everything works if you let it” situation.

no idea where it came from!

Tx, I will go about trying to remove it then.

My supplier add this to their original deployment along with tmux tbf I never new it was there but I was happy that I didn’t have to install tmux

Turns out one of providers does, too. I think that’s new, though, the CentOS 8 installs I did with Vultr didn’t have rsyslog. That feels like regression, but maybe they just got tired of people yelling at them about not having any log files (I get tired of it, too, sometimes).

The journal is so much better once you get your head around it, shame not all devs have converted from logs to the journal

We haven’t converted Webmin to log to the journal yet, either, but someday soon one of us will get time, I’m sure. (We did finally convert to using a systemd unit on systemd systems, which is also a good improvement.)
