I want to create a backup for 2 of my virtualservers Virtualmin > Backup and Restore.

But following issues happen:

  1. I’ve used the “download-link” option, but there isn’t any link shown after Backup finished, just this page:

  2. Virtualmin > Backup and Restore > Backup logs are empty

  3. Virtualmin > Backup and Restore > Running Backups show “No virtualmin backups are currently running”

  4. Virtualmin > Backup and Restore > Scheduled Backups show: “No scheduled backups have been created yet.”

  5. /tmp/.webmin just contain:

That’s it! Any Idea why backup not work at all, and how to figure out where the issue might be? Are there logs to check for this?

it appears to work for me

@jimr1 Ok, first thing is solved.
The UI is a bit confusing to me… you just need to mark the entries in the left area and must not move it left over!!

Then I got a download link in the next screen… BUT the file only contain virtualmin_config files, and not any data of the virtualservers at all. Isn’t this backup-section to “also” backup the whole data of the Virtualserver?

In the Account-Plan of those two Virtualservers, the Ability to Backup is activated:

in the downloaded archive are you not seeing something like this ?

blocked out is the domain name, but each file contains what I would expect

@jimr1
Nothing like that. Above in the Screenshot is the whole virtualmin-backup.tar.gz file shown.
Maybe do I miss to tick some checkboxes or radiobuttons?

are you sure you added the domains then ?I didn’t understand the comment

As I have to move them over else they are not backed up

To be honest… the Dialog is a bit confusing to me.

1st try

First I’ve ticked the Radio-Button “Only selected…”, select the both domains and move them over to the right side:

But this seems to be wrong as this don’t create any backup-file at all.

2nd try

Then I’ve ticket the Radio-Button “Only selected…”, select the both domains and DON’T move them over to the right side - keep them just marked on left side.

The result was as shown… just a tar.gz File with virtualmin files inside.

Oh OK I move the domains to the right and that works for me as you can see from the screen shot of the downloaded archive

What do you select on the radio-buttons? Also the “Only selected…”?

But I’ll give it a try again now and see what happend.

Yep, like before.
Just see this output, with no Link at all:

@jimr1 wasn’t there a way for the “customer” to create backups for his virtualserver via the UI at his own?

If you give them permission to the module yes they can
virtualmin->domain->manage virtual server->edit owner limits

I don’t find manage virtual server, could you please show me a sceenshot of it?
Backups are activated in my plan for those users.

here you go

I wonder why it don’t look the same at my server (logged in as root):

Do you also have this versions?

Webmin version 2.105
Virtualmin version 7.8.2
Usermin version 2.005

thats a bit confusing, I don’t know that version.

mine

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version Rocky Linux 9.5
Usermin version 2.102
Virtualmin version 7.30.4 Pro
Theme version 21.20.7
Apache version 2.4.62
Package updates All installed packages are up to date

This may show how far behind you are

the versions are a bit confusing.

I would update to a newer version of virtualmin/webmin running older version may lead to problems

It should be the recent version I have… at the virtualmin webpage I see same Versions in the Screenshot:

Might it be, that the Pro-Version No. and the GPL ones differ?

I don’t remember how I’ve installed Webmin / Virtualmin at this Server. Might it be that it was via apt, and the repositories of Ubuntu Linux 22.04.5 are outdated?

addendum

Ah, I see now. Didn’t was aware, that Webmin/Virtualmin don’t upgrade OS for new LTS Versions, but just minor and major updates inside current LTS.

So I think, I need to upgrade the OS to a newer LTS version and will see if there are new versions of Virtualmin and Webmin in their repositories?!?

You maybe on an older set of repositories perhaps download the script to update to the newer repositories ( i cannot remember where this is located) but there will be posts on here that cover that. Ubuntu 22.04 can handle the new repositories

@Joe can you give a hint about how to check, find and fix possibly incorrect repository URLs?

I did the search look at setup-repos | Virtualmin — Open Source Web Hosting Control Panel
