Backup Mail Server with Virtualmin GPL

Hi,

http://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/email/hold-and-forward

Is the above achivable with two Virtualmin GPL servers?
I’m willing to do some manual labour

Any help is appreciated.

Probably not automatically, since the GPL version is missing the required “Backup mail servers” setting. You’d need to manually configure at least the user accounts on the backup system as well as the primary.

I don’t think one should be creating accounts on a backup MX. The point of backup MX is that it gets HELD to be delivered to the actual server with said accounts. Having accounts may cause it to keep it.

@jouva: Doing so you’d prevent a very important anti-spam feature to work: Accept mail only for existing users, while evaluating data of the deliverer (IP address, HELO and stuff) before mail is even accepted:

Virtualmin 3.87 and later can configure secondary mail servers to only accept email for addresses that exist on the primary server

In a pure hold-and-forward setup, that combination of information is lost.

About this topic, there is a simple way to achieve this configuration with two GPL?

Best,

Hi,

It’s technically possible to do with GPL version, though not automatically as noted above. We’ve been toying with the idea here as we work to setup our email cluster.

While providing the assistance to set this up requires some understanding the process, and a few other things, if you feel up to the challenge, one such tutorial exists, explaining one possible way of accomplishing the task.
