Alias domain created (default settings), but not resolving to parent domain.

Hello all

I have a Ubuntu 14.04 VPS server with Virtualmin 4.18.gpl. Everything upgraded, latest today.

I have created many virtual hosts that work perfectly, also subdomains work without any problem.

For one virtual host I need to use Wordpress Network (Wordpress Multisite). And I need an alias domain to point to the parent domain (Wordpress domain) in order to let Wordpress redirect the call to one of the wordpress-networked subdomains.

The nameservers of the alias domain is the nameservers of the above mentioned Ubuntu 14.04 installation, so configured correctly as all other virtual host working on this machine

I am able to create this alias domain from within Virtualmin (keeping default settings), and everything “looks” OK, but this alias domain will not resolve to the parent domain. My internet browser just hangs there forever when I point to the alias domain.

Every test PASSES when I put the alias domain in a tool like http://www.webdnstools.com/dnstools/domain_check, thus telling me that the virtualmin setup and the nameservers are working appearantly as well as any other domain on the server…but still not able to resolve to the parent domain.

I am able to ping all virtual hosts on the server, but not this alias domain, this even if webdnstools.com reporting that the domain works ok…strange.

I have also tried to create this aliasdomain as an alias domain for another virtual host that has only a simple working joomla installation. The alias domain will not resolve to this parent domain either. So for this I conclude that the problem has nothing to do with the WordPress Network (mulitisite) configuration mentioned in the first virtual host.

It seems to me that for some reason I am not able to create a working alias domain at all. I can create it in Virtualmin, but it is not working as it is supposed to do.

I have looked at various logs without finding anything special that could indicate the problem.

Only in apache error.log I found some messages about “libgcc_s.so.1 must be installed for pthread_cancel to work”. I don’t know if this has anything to do with the non working alias domain.

Anyone able to help?

Problem is solved - It turned out I am personally using opendns on my personal computer, and not all dns servers had updated the IP to the alias domain, so I could not reach the domain, even if it was actually working perfectly on the server itself. So stupid, I am sorry, I should have thought about this
