You can activate a free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate from within virtualmin. Make sure you use a FQDN (fully qualified domain name) for your server hostname. And then Let’s Encrypt will generate an SSL certificate for the admin area.
@j_aegis right now i have three FQDNs and they all have wordpress websites active on them, can i still use one of those domains for the Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate for virtualmin?
Yes. Although I believe it is recommended to have the virtual host which hosts your server control panel to be separate.
I have 6 boxes (from 3 hosting companies) they are located in different countries around the world (east and west coast US, Japan, India, Holland, UK) all of them use a FQDN as recommended for the host name (something easy to remember) host.countryname.tld
- none of them use a real domain name.
Most of them have genuine VS on them, all with LE certs for the registered domains. The main admin panel (all the domains) are accessed through one of the domains and port 10000. The domain “owners” login in to their “owned” domains and access a limited admin panel.
There is absolutely no need to waste a registered domain name on the FQDN of the host box.
I found a detailed explanation about FQDN and PQDN:
https://www.omnisecu.com/tcpip/fully-qualified-domain-name-fqdn-and-partially-qualified-domain-name-pqdn.php
If you did your install with a FQDN that resolves as per the recommended install you can create a virtual server with that FQDN (don’t enable mail). VM-pro doesn’t count this server against your count VM-gpl doesn’t keep count. VM will request the cert and you have ssl on your panel. It’s a lot easier than requesting LetsEncrypt through Webmin for your host. You can log in through any user that has a cert and gives you the privileges you need and use your panel.
You can use all of them with Virtualmin. When Virtualmin is managing a domain, and it has an SSL certificate, it will use that certificate if you login to Virtulmin (Webmin) on that name. i.e. if I host example.tld
in Virtualmin, and it has a certificate, and I browse to https://example.tld:10000
Webmin will serve the cert for that name.
We recommend you use a name in a zone you own/manage, rather than the bare domain (e.g., I use srv1.virtualmin.com
or similar). There’s no reason to make up names. For mail to work well and without any additional configuration and hassle, the name of the system should resolve (and should not match any name you’re hosting virtual mail for in Virtualmin).
