Virtualmin login via domain and not hostname.domain okay or not

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version AlmaLinux 9.5

After I installed Virtualmin, I found the doco stated login via ip address then login via hostname.domain.com:10000

My Virtualmin hostname is the same as the hostname I created when I purchased my cloud plan.

I have only one domain and that is how I access the virtualmin GUI, ie
https://example.com.au:10000

If I try https://hostname.example.com.au:10000 I get an unsecured message.

My question - is my setup incorrect in that I should not be logging in via
https://example.com.au:10000
and should be via
https://hostname.example.com.au:10000

Happy to provide my Virtualmin DNS records if it helps.

I’ve always used this format. Only time I’ve used the hostname is on initial setup.
You can use hostname but you need it to resolve so it can pass letsencrypt request.

you can test using https://letsdebug.net/ using http-01

As the doctor says, “stop doing that”.

You have a Virtualmin domain with a valid Let’s Encrypt certificate. Why wouldn’t you use that to login now?

I take the documentation literally.

Thanks! One of those niggling items doing my head in.

What documentation? We don’t tell you to use the IP or the system hostname forever. Just for installation.

Ah ok. Just my assumption then. Coming from cPanel it’s via hostname.example.com

Hmmm, cpanel i’ve always used cpanel.example.com or example.com/cpanel.

Generally speaking, if your DNS is configured correctly (or managed by Virtualmin and glue records are right), you can use admin.example.tld (where example.tld is a domain hosted in Virtualmin), which will redirect to https://example.tld:10000.
