I’m trying to install virtualmin gpl version on centos 5.4 for the first time. I’m very new to linux and just can;t make sense of the install guide. I’m stuck at the run up2date part.
It seems up2date is not installed to even run. I have been searching all afternoon for a way to download and install up2date so I can run it. Completely lost!
Well, the docs that I suspect you’re reading mention that the up2date thing is for RHEL/CentOS 3.x and 4.x.
You’re using 5.x, so that won’t be the case
I’d suggest just running a quick “yum upgrade” on your system before running the installer… however, I’m not entirely certain that’s necessary, but it won’t hurt at all
Eric, thanks for the quick response! I ended up figuring that out just after I wrote the post. Managed to get it installed and it seemed to go very well with just one warning that ClamAV was not the most recent version. I think that’s a minor detail right now.
Now I’m onto the next problem, configuring the network properly. I’m a bit unsure of how to get a domain name to point to the login in screen. I can get to the login screen with the ip of the server on a local network but not by using my public ip. Sorry, i’m real new
In Webmin>Network Config>Hostname and DNS Client> Host name: [my FQDN] - Resoluton order: Host, DNS - DNS Servers: 127.0.0.1, 67.XX.XXX.XXX, 67.XX.XXX.XXX
Yup – if 67.XX.XXX.XXX refers to your Virtualmin server’s IP address, and you have ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com setup as nameservers on GoDaddy, it’s looking good!
Also, in your case, you’d probably want to go into Virtualmin, choose mydomain.com from the select list, go into Services -> DNS Domain, and add ns1 and ns2 into the “Address” records for your domain.
Great if godady is set up but I think I’m a bit lost with virtualmin…
67.XX.XXX.XXX refers to my public ip but im not sure about the servers ip address in virtualmin. If I’m in the right place: Virualmin>Addresses and Networking>Change IP Address>Address of servers to update is set to 192.168.0.10 which is the ip of the server on the local network. I’m using DMZ on the gateway to point the public IP to 192.168.0.10
Also mydomain.com is not in the list. I only have mydomain2.com in the list. What i’m trying to acheive is when I put mydomain.com in to the browser, the virtualmin login screen comes up. Am I going about this all wrong, all i get is timeout.
I think I should have created the first virtual server as mydomain.com so that it would be the top level server. Is that right?
anyway I switched mydomain.com and mydomain2.com by renaming the domains. Selected mydomain.com, went to Virtualmin>services>DNS doamin>Address, added ns1.67.xx.xx.xx and ns2.67.xx.xx.xx to the already existing records that were prepopulated.
These ns ips, are they supposed to be my public ip or the ns ip’s of my ISP (cable)?
squishy has been showing this message all along (pre and post domain name switch):
