Virtualmin Configuration: DNS Server Settings couldn't be saved

Hello Virtualmin Users/Supporter

I’ve setup Virtualmin 3.86gpl on Ubuntu 10.4.2 LTS on two different PC’s.
When I check (Re-check Configuration) the Virtualmin configuration, i get the following message:

Virtualmin is configured to setup DNS zones, but this system is not setup to use itself as a DNS server. Either add 127.0.0.1 to the list of DNS servers, or turn off the BIND feature on the module config page.

So I copy “127.0.0.1” go to the list of DNS Servers past “it” into the list click SAVE, click APPLY;
but when I re-check Virtualmins configuration the “127.0.0.1” entry is gone!

So I could not save any DNS Server list modification.

Further Information:
Both PC’s are behind an ASUS router using DD-WRT as firmware, and
dnsmasq works as DHCP/DNS Server for the local (privat) network, and
I use the mac address of each PC in the network to manage IP’s and FQDN, and
the router works as a local nameserver (as external nameservers I use the ones of my ISP.

Any help would be appreciated!

Kind regards

When you applied the change, see if the 127.0.0.1 has been added to /etc/resolv.conf.

When using DHCP to fetch host config, resolv.conf will be overwritten. Best is to assign a static IP address to your servers. Otherwise you’ll have to use some tricks or turn off resolv.conf checking in Virtualmin.

Howdy,

There’s an entry in the documentation here titled “Received Virtualmin error that 127.0.0.1 isn’t listed in /etc/resolv.conf” that covers how to handle that issue:

http://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/dns/faq

I added prepend … to my dhclient.conf and it helps!

thanks a lot!
